My teaching style is unique to each student's indivdual needs. I take time to recognize my students learning style and provide the need materials or teaching style based their needs. I teach to a mastery learning approach appropriate for language instruction. I present the material first in accordance with the text presentation, and then drill and quiz to ascertain the level of comprehension over the next several days. I ask all students to answer sample questions, and I am looking to see who does not understand what, and why. I realized that teaching was my passion and became a full-time ESL teacher at an elementary school in Washington, DC while earning masters degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from American University. Prior to my second career in the field of service to at-risk senior citizens, I taught English for four years at Westport High School. Following the reduction in force made necessary by budgetary constraints, I taught for ten years at the Crystal Springs School in Assonet, MA as a Special Needs teacher. While rewarding, I missed the challenge of more literary pursuits and began teaching evening classes at a local communuity-based organization. My tutoring experience had its inception in that setting.

A Little Bit About Me...

Because I've worked with students who have various learning differences, I have a vast array of teaching strategies. What works for one child doesn't always work for another. I encourage auditory learners to always read the instructions back to me. It helps if they can explain the material as if they were teaching the subject. Visual learns tend to respond to charts, graphs, note-taking, powerpoint- anything containing shapes and color. Tactile learners have sensory needs. If at all possible, this type of learner should be given a "hands-on" task to help them assimilate the material.
