Experienced tutor specializing in science and mathematics

I have experience working with students who are advanced and seeking supplementary tutoring as well as with students who are having difficulty with a subject. I have tutored mathematics as well as chemistry, biology, physics, and other subjects. I have tutored students from a range of ages and I worked with my first student over four years ago while I was in college.
I try to work with students to find connections between different aspects of the material that we're working on as well as to find connections to other subjects. I find that by relating specific topics to broader perspectives on a subject as well as related subjects, the student can gain a greater appreciation for the coherence and importance of a particular subject area.

The process is just as important as the product. If a student can come up with the correct answer, but he or she has no idea how or why it is correct or how they got it, I feel like their learning is incomplete. Especially in Math, but also in many other subjects, concepts build upon each other. For this reason, I like to explain not just *how* to get there, but also *why* we got that answer; then students have a firmer foundation for the trickier concepts. I love seeing the lightbulb "go on," when kids finally "get it."

French teacher
I am currently teaching French at Northwest High School in Omaha NE. I am a native French speaker and I have a bachelor degree in French. I also have an associate degree in English. I have 4 years experience in teaching French in high school and three years experience in tutoring elementary, intermediary, and advanced French students in a night school literacy program for adults (in Africa) who did not have the opportunity to attend regular school. I love teaching, and the positive effect that I always have on my students (meaning how they demonstrate the desire to learn more), helps me understand that this is the field in which I would like to spend my career. Even though I am a native speaker of French, I decided to get a Bachelor degree in French, because I believe it is more professional to have a college degree in the subject that I want to teach, in addition ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching and working with children. I believe that all children are capable of learning. Each child is unique and, therefore, has a unique style of learning that must be tapped in to so that they reach their maximum potential. I believe that learning by doing is the best method of learning. "My" kids are always successful and eager to learn. They understand that we are a team and that together we'll reach farther than they thought possible. There is no higher calling than that of teaching.
I have spent thirty-five years in the field of education. During my college years I worked in the early childhood field and I worked as a private tutor as a means of supporting my education. Since that time I have worked in public schools, religious organizations, private educational facilities, and non-profit organizations partnering with public schools. I enjoy teaching students how to learn. Learning strategies teach students how to learn proficiently and quickly. Consider the following illustration. A student can take a football and run toward the goal line. He who runs efficiently and smartly (avoiding players whose goal is to tackle him) will cross the goal line. Discipline and strategy are essential to effective learning. Most students do not plan to fail their subjects, they fail to plan study techniques. I am a patient and easy going person with students. I am a candid and tactful person. I give each student 100% of my effort. All I ask is the student give me 100% of his or her effort.
While I studied for my undergraduate degree, I tutored fellow class mates in History, Business Law, English and other subjects. I taught study skills to help them improve their learning process. To broaden my tutoring horizons, I have rece ... read more

I currently hold a Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, and I will have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Early Childhood come May 2011. During my first degree, I tutored many kids at the Elementary level that was set up through the University. I absolutely enjoyed working with the younger kids. These teaching experiences have allowed me to work with a diverse group of students of all backgrounds allowing me the opportunity to observe a variety of teaching styles and to teach in schools with widely varying curricula and philosophies.

I have a broad range of teaching experience. I've worked with students with behavior and developmental disorders, English Language Learner students, and a wide variety of ability and age levels. My previous positions allowed me to work in both rural and urban areas with students and families from various social, economic, and educational backgrounds.
I do my best to determine how each child learns and tailor my instruction accordingly. I realize not everyone processes information in the same way and work hard to vary my teaching methods as needed. If a student is struggling, I seek input from the student and their parents. I believe students should have an active role in their own education and encourage them to give me feedback. Parental involvement is also something that is very valuable.

I love to see the proverbial light come on and the students eyes widen and they say "OH! I get it!" I've tutored a wide variety of students from diverse backgrounds. I try to make mathematics fun, like a puzzle to be figured out, and remove the "hard chore" stigma which is generally hard pressed into a students mind by the time I arrive. Getting the student to believe in themselves and believe mathematics isn't a daunting task it's just difficult until you learn the tricks is my goal. I've notice most students find word problems to be most challenging so I purchased a word problem book to draw examples from which seems to help.
Prior to and during my employment with Metropolitan Community College (Between 1998 and 2007) I was a volunteer tutor with non traditional students in the Adult Basic Education/General Education Development ABE/GED program of Metro community college.

A Little Bit About Me...

The thing I enjoy most about teaching is seeing a concept "click" in a child's head. I feel that this is possible with all children if the right strategy is used to teach them. Students learn in lots of different ways. I feel it would be my job as a tutor to find out what would work in each student's academic life. Whether it be a more hands-on approach, or simply reading from a book, I find what helps each child to learn most effectively. This, in turn helps them to progress in their endeavors at school.
Throughout my college experiences I was given the opportunity to teach a diverse group of learners. I feel that this has prepared me in my efforts to become a better teacher. In my field based experiences and student teaching I learned about new approaches to teaching several subjects to elementary school students. These subjects include math, science, social studies, and languag ... read more
