I try to find a common, basic level of understanding with the student and then show how a few key insights can help the student broaden her/his knowledge. In math, for example, this typically means showing how elementary concepts can be applied to simplify more complex problems, such as showing how such things as the distributive and associative properties are being used in solving equations, sometimes in a context where these things are often glossed over. I have taught computer science courses in business college, and I taught algebra, calculus, and statistics as a graduate student. I remain convinced of the necessity of obtaining basic math skills for success in today's world, and I spend a lot of time maintaining my own skills in math and computers. I am currently spending 8-12 hours per day, mostly programming vectors and mathematical functions as spreadsheet macros.

I believe in learning to do things the "hard" way for math, making change, etc. Calculators are good for higher functions and after basics are learned. I try showing different ways of looking at something so the child will understand one way or another. I stress creativity and working things out for yourself as that is needed in life. I have a B.S. degree in Information Systems with over 30 years experience in the computer industry. I have 9 children which are home schooled (ages 3-17). I'm a math/science guy. I began tutoring as a high school student for the Wayne State University Math Corps. I tutored students entering the 7th and 8th grade in math topics ranging from basic math to calculus. I continued tutoring at the University of Michigan in the Sweetland Writing Center, helping college students draft and revise essays for a variety of subjects. I also spent a summer in Honduras teaching English to elementary students ranging from grade K-5. In this setting I was in command of my own classroom of students. I am now a recent graducate of the University of Michigan where I earned a bachelor's degree in Secondary Education with certification in Spanish and English.
