Teaching has been my focus for the past 25 years, resulting in a bachelors degree in Psychology and a masters degree in Classical Archaeology and Art. I was an Assistant Curator of Ancient Art, teaching the university's Honors courses in Classical Studies and giving numerous lectures. By writing various papers and a master's thesis, I am experienced in research, writing and presentation. I have taught history to high school students for six years, taught Girl Scout leaders and girls in my own troop for ten years, tutored Native American college students in all subjects and taught vocal lessons.
I love to teach people of all ages, developing great relationships. I am an interactive teacher, in that I believe in hands-on activities directed to that person's style of learning, determined through my experience in psychology and counseling. A Little Bit About Me...

I am known for my amazing listening skills and empathy. I am a student of Non-violent communication and use it at every opportunity. I love to teach with symbolism and visual techniques. Most of all I find it is important to listen to the child and see how they need to be taught and adjust to their comfort levels. I feel that patience and compassion for different cultures is also key to the student’s success.
I recently graduated with honors from PSU and have a strong desire to work with and help children. I have a passion for literacy and believe it has the power to change lives. I am a single mom of a 14-year-old son and have also volunteered with the African Women’s Coalition to tutor African Refugee children. Working with the children transformed my life and taught me the importance of knowledge.

I am a patient, creative person, with an ever-present sense of humor. I have a strong work ethic, and consider academic success as both a great necessity and a great gift in a child’s life. My goal is to make learning fun, as well as successful. Once a student feels success, the fun then comes naturally. I try to build confidence and self-esteem in children through academic success, as I believe they are irrefutably linked. My hope is to be the teacher that is remembered, the one who made a positive academic and personal impression. Ultimately, I hope to help your child achieve his or her academic goals, to meet your parental expectations, and to share a love of learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching and relating to people. I know from personal experience that one good teacher can change the way a student views an entire subject. I am easy-going, friendly, and patient. I believe that all students have great potential and should be given every opportunity to fulfill it.
Having graduated from a liberal arts university, I know that being well-rounded is very important in life. I graduated from Whitworth with a BS in Math and minors in Spanish and Computer Science, so I know what it is like to learn complex subjects. I have tutored my peers along with students younger and older than myself, as a mathematician and a Spanish speaker. I led a Spanish Live Lab for two years and informally tutored math for four. Also, I have a great deal of grammatical knowledge from writing research papers in math and computer science and Spanish.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to watch a child develop a sense of accomplishment while meeting personal goals. I believe it is important to provide children with opportunities to explore and discover their strengths. I believe that an attentive educator can observe and identify the areas which can be strengthened, so that children can achieve academic and personal success. My goal is to provide children with a creative, secure and nurturing environment in which they are encouraged to become life-long learners by exploring, making mistakes and discovering.
Over the past 15 years, I have taught in both special education and standard classrooms for children ages 5-9, I have tutored and served as a private teacher for children ages 5-17, and have homeschooled my own children. I am very interested in understanding how the brain works to process information and how that understanding can be used to empower ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I strongly believe that an education that leads with concepts instead of rote is the surest route to lifelong success. This is certainly the method that worked for me, and I find that, without the conceptual grounding, a student will not get as much out of necessary practice exercises. Thus, when I am working with a student on a subject, I tend to approach the concept foremost, creatively using a wide range of examples and descriptions to elucidate it. This is the best use of my time with a student, instead of just correcting their exercises. It also requires the confidence of the student to know that they can fully grasp a concept first, and then put it into practice, so I like to encourage that personal confidence.
Throughout my education, I've found that broad academic interests have led me to pursue a wide range of subjects simultaneously. My undergraduate degree is a double ma ... read more

I have a B.S. in Computer Science. I also have 3 years as a substitute teacher as well as 3 in the semiconductor field. I come form a family of educators (mother, uncle, great aunt). I college, I tutored many of my friends in higher mathematics (one of which attained a PhD in Electrical Engineering recently). I like working with children. I also enjoyed observing the wide variety of ways the human mind processes numbers and the mathematical process. My mathematical teaching technique is to patiently observe how a student works and adjust my style accordingly. Even though mathematics comes off to many people as a rigid discipline. A thousand ways exist to teach and illustrate the same concept.

For various reasons, we all learn in different ways. Often times this is difficult to address in a classroom setting, forcing teachers to address skills by giving particular instructions (how to write a paper, how to solve an equation, etc.) thereby making education a project of memorization more so than understanding. I believe it is important for students to grasp the broad concepts of their subject manner, through their particular learning style, then applying these to specific objects as opposed to the other way around. This not only allows for students to achieve in various exercises, but creates a context by which students can relate to their subject, thus internalizing it and creating a solid foundation to move forward from.
Educationally, I have a BA in Mathematics from Vassar College, a school where I achieved a high level of success graduating with high honors both gen ... read more

My teaching style is simple. In my classroom, I am the teacher, the gate keeper and the executioner. This is premised by my belief in the contingency theory, tempered in some ways that an open, honest and frank discussion in the class is a vital and productive way to educate.
I am professional, and would love to apply my ideas in innovation regarding the education environment, duration and implementation. My bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, while accomplished a while back, is a plus in that I’ve learned to apply my analytical skills in the years gone by. I am presently an AVID tutor, and this is another badge of my working skill that I am proud to mention. I had dealt with students which were not emotionally or physically set-up for the classroom that needed to be addressed on a daily basis. I have taught math and algebra in a college setting. I have been in the educatio ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Getting my Ph.D. in English has given me the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. During the last seven years I have been tutoring students at all grade levels, from elementary school through high school, as well as teaching classes in English at several universities. I have tutored children in test-taking skills (including math, vocabulary, and critical reading skills) for the SAT and for private school entrance exams. I have also helped students with their writing at all grade levels, on such common problems as grammar, clarity, and learning how to elaborate on one's ideas.
I have always seen teaching as a matter of reigniting a natural curiosity which all students have, and directing it toward an academic subject. My priority as a tutor is to help students feel confident about their own ability to master the material. For each student this requires a diff ... read more
