I recently graduated with honors from PSU and have a strong desire to work with and help children. I have a passion for literacy and believe it has the power to change lives. I am a single mom of a 14-year-old son and have also volunteered with the African Women’s Coalition to tutor African Refugee children. Working with the children transformed my life and taught me the importance of knowledge.

A Little Bit About Me...

Having graduated from a liberal arts university, I know that being well-rounded is very important in life. I graduated from Whitworth with a BS in Math and minors in Spanish and Computer Science, so I know what it is like to learn complex subjects. I have tutored my peers along with students younger and older than myself, as a mathematician and a Spanish speaker. I led a Spanish Live Lab for two years and informally tutored math for four. Also, I have a great deal of grammatical knowledge from writing research papers in math and computer science and Spanish.

I have a B.S. in Computer Science. I also have 3 years as a substitute teacher as well as 3 in the semiconductor field. I come form a family of educators (mother, uncle, great aunt). I college, I tutored many of my friends in higher mathematics (one of which attained a PhD in Electrical Engineering recently). I also recently did some volunteer work in Michigan tutoring Somalian refugees in Mathematics.
I like working with children. I also enjoyed observing the wide variety of ways the human mind processes numbers and the mathematical process. My mathematical teaching technique is to patiently observe how a student works and adjust my style accordingly. Even though mathematics comes off to many people as a rigid discipline. A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout my education, I've found that broad academic interests have led me to pursue a wide range of subjects simultaneously. My undergraduate degree is a double major in music and comparative religion, and my other coursework ranged from astronomy to constitutional law. I recognize with gratitude the manifold opportunities that were available to me, but the most important piece was taking ownership of my own education. Often times this is difficult to address in a classroom setting, forcing teachers to address skills by giving particular instructions (how to write a paper, how to solve an equation, etc.) thereby making education a project of memorization more so than understanding. I believe it is important for students to grasp the broad concepts of their subject manner, through their particular learning style, then applying these to specific objects as opposed to the other way around.
