Tutor for Regular Elementary and Special Education

I have recently retired after 30+ years as an elementary special and regular education teacher. For the past 15 years I have also worked as a tutor for the city of White Plains. I have done extensive private tutoring for the past 20 years. For 17 years I worked as an elementary special education classroom teacher at New York Hospital in an out-patient day treatment program. This program involved elementary school age children who displayed severe emotional and academic difficulties and were unable to function in a regular school setting.
Multi-sensory, positive reinforcement approach with a focus on student involvment by the use of manipulatives for a hands on approach. I have also employed behavior modification programs in the classroom setting when necessary.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that there is no such thing as a "bad" student/child. There are children that need more help and attention than others but everyone deserves the same amount of effort. I am very patient and laid back and really want to provide the best care possible to all children that I teach. I believe that students learn best when they are completely involved in the lesson. I like hands-on activities and less lecturing. The children that I teach now could testify to my ability to bring humor into the classroom and to make sure that learning is fun.
I received my BA from one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country. In addition to my psychology degree, I also studied Spanish extensively. I am a very descriptive and thorough teacher. I enjoy explaining subjects first, then writing examples on the board to encourage note-taking. Then I like students to think of their own examples. I like to ensure that I am very clear in delivering my point, because I know how some students will remain quiet, even if they do not understand completely. If a student struggles to comprehend, and then I move on to the next topic too quickly, it is easy for that student to fall behind. I find it very important for students to hear what I'm talking about, then take notes on the topic, and then offer their own insight. I believe this process improves their ability to think creatively and become active participants in their learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

My undergraduate education at Oberlin College has exposed me to a wide range of academic fields, including philosophy, religion, literature, psychology, physics, history, and economics. I have tutored elementary, middle, and high school students in reading, writing, math, and music theory for the past five years. Additionally, I have had experience teaching large classes of students in India and Ghana with an organization called Cross-Cultural Solutions.
I have a passion for helping students of all ages and levels to comprehend academic concepts and issues. In particular, I find the one-on-one setting beneficial for my specific teaching qualities. I highly value the focus on the exchange of ideas and questions that private tutoring allows for. I graduated from McGill University in Montreal in 2001, with a BA in Geography and a minor in History. Since then I have had a very diverse experience, working in Vermont as a teacher's aide as well as in a land trust, and in Montreal managing a nightclub and booking bands and acts from Canada and the US. My passion is English literature. I read constantly and love sharing books with my friends and students. I am fluent in French, having lived in France as a child, and graduated from the Lycee Francais de New York high school in 1997.
When I started working at Colchester High School in Vermont, I initially identified myself much more with the students than the teachers and staff. Back in high school, I went out of my way to rebel against the school. In Vermont I quickly learned that there is a big difference-- that as an adult now, I am on the "other side," but can use this closene ... read more

I assess the abilities of each person I work with and develop an approach accordingly. I think that a combination of patience and humor can provide for an outstanding learning environment, and I employ this approach when teaching.

I prefer to work with students from the 4th grade up thru college level, and have experience working with individuals with special educational needs. I am patient, caring, sensitive and consistent. I am well versed in all areas of grammar, syntax and composition. I believe that every experience is a story that can be put down on paper and that every student can learn to write effectively. Most of all I believe that learning can and should be an enjoyable experience.

I view teaching as successful transference of knowledge. I have a profound respect for teachers that teach for the love of it. After I completed my Bachelors degree, I taught for 2 weeks at a High School in Barbados that catered to students with special education needs. Though it was a short period of time, I enjoyed developing different techniques to engage the unique needs of each child. I prefer interactive methods of teaching as I believe that children learn more when they feel a part of the learning process. The students that I taught appreciated my caring and patient approach. Patience is key when tutoring because pressure only inhibits learning potential. I receive great joy from the expression on a child’s face when they have finally understood a concept. Then and only then do I smile with great pride of having been able to accomplish successful transference of knowledge. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

After graduating from college with a BA, I began working for an environmental restoration and public education program. We led large volunteer groups sometime of more than 100 people, in local park and forest restoration event, and also led youth groups on 10 day restoration and hiking trips in the national forest. After this I worked for a program that places tutors in schools that are in need, where i tutored K-5 students in reading, led a ESL class of about 10 students, and worked as a teachers assistant in the class room. I have spent the last several years at a monastery where I have had experience mentoring and working with the public in meditation programs.
