I have a passion for children. I love working with children on a one on one bases. I am very energetic. I love the learning process of children. I currently hold a bachelor degree in math education. I have been a reading and math tutor for the Pine Bluff School District for about ten years. I have worked as a math teacher at a detention center for boys for two years. I have worked as a six grade teacher for a private school. I have a strong constructivist teaching style: I do my best to connect a student's prior knowledge and experiences to new knowledge in order to build on his or her experience, thereby creating a foundation for intrinsic learning. My reading lessons are technically rigorous, but are supplemented with frequent discussion to check for understanding. I abide by the principle "first accuracy, then speed." In all subjects, I strive for student mastery and maximum comprehension.
While enrolled in the teacher certification program with Hendrix College, I mentored/tutored an eighth grader in various subjects. I believe that patience is the most important virtue when teaching a child new material. I have a nephew who is ADHD and I have helped him with many school projects and other homework. He requires a lot of attention and a lot of patience. So I am aware that all children are different and have a different way of learning. I believe in finding what gets them motivated and expanding on that!
