A Little Bit About Me...

I am a recent graduate from a liberal arts college which has allowed me the opportunity to be immersed in a variety of subjects. I graduated with a BA in Honors Mathematics and a BA in Physics and am going to continue my education to pursue a PhD in Computational and Systems Biology. These experiences have allowed me to gain expertise in the areas of math and the sciences. Besides that I have been involved in several research projects and have had my work published. Thus, my experiences have allowed me to gain strength in both technical writings and writings in other subject areas. Practice, practice, practice. Math is not learned by watching, it is learned by doing. Some types of problems can be learned after only a few examples, others take much more time and patience. My role as a tutor is help guide students through a problem while doing as little of the actual calculations as possible. I try to make my students see that many problems, while different in appearance, are actually the same as ones they've already solved before. I always strive to get that "ah ha!" moment from my students, where they understand not only how to do a problem, but why we used that method to solve it in the first place.

I believe that everybody can learn and comprehend math. Math is an intimidating subject for most people, so my goal as a teacher is to show my students that it is more like a puzzle. With all puzzles, you just need to know the steps to solving it in order to be successful, and my job is to teach these steps. It bothers me when people say how much they hate math, so when I’m working with students, my goal is to make my students never feel intimidated. I do this by giving them real-world examples to show them that they can succeed if they can see it apply to their life. I think with the right instruction, anybody can learn math and be successful.
