The process is just as important as the product. If a student can come up with the correct answer, but he or she has no idea how or why it is correct or how they got it, I feel like their learning is incomplete. Especially in Math, but also in many other subjects, concepts build upon each other. For this reason, I like to explain not just *how* to get there, but also *why* we got that answer; then students have a firmer foundation for the trickier concepts. I prefer to use materials that students have been given in their classroom (textbooks, homework, study guides, notes) and provide additional explanation and examples. I always ask students which areas they would like to go over most importantly. I ask them to try an example problem with me, and then one without me until they feel confident in their ability to solve that type of math problem and its concepts.
