A Little Bit About Me...

Working as a High School English teacher for seven years, in Alternative Education, has greatly honed my skills in assisting students to excel. Teaching critical thinking skills to those struggling to grasp concepts, provides great benefit in every subject area. I have used my expertise in reading and writing to open doors for others as they begin to learn, in confidence, and strengthen their own skills. Aside from substitute teaching--whereby I have taught every subject area, I have, as a full-time teacher, taught a variety of English classes (literature and writing) and a psychology elective.
I believe that every person has a specific set of gifts, talents and abilities that is unique to each of us. Education, through its varied forms, is vital in the process of equipping children with the ability to grow and walk in their fullness so that they are confident in contributing t ... read more

When working with children, I try my best to be engaging, interactive, and fun. If necessary, I'll use props (e.g. building blocks) to help illustrate concepts, and I always try to ask many questions along the way to make sure my explanations are clear. With older students I will use a slightly more textbook approach, but keeping lessons interactive still remains essential, and props may still be useful in some circumstances. In both situations, I try to find which learning styles work best for the student and present lessons based on those. Each person has a unique way of learning, and if a teacher takes the time to understand it, then the student's true potential can be reached.
As a Regent's Scholar at UC Davis, I sought to develop skills in both the sciences and the liberal arts. As such, I earned two bachelors degrees, a BS in Civil/Environmental Engineering with an empha ... read more

I have always loved to teach children because it excites me to see them really grasp a concept, and overcome a hurdle they thought was beyond their reach. Each child has so much potential-far greater than any of us give them credit for when we first meet them! I love to tap into the unique learning styles of each child, and really draw on what motivates him/her and makes him/her excited to learn. When this connection is made, the possibilities are endless for what they can learn, and how far they can go.
I have always been passionate about receiving and giving the best education. As a graduate of a top-level liberal arts college I was able to hone my skills in English writing and composition. I received a certificate in Elementary Education both in New York and California, and have taught in elementary schools for three years in grades 3, and a 1st/2nd grade combo class, respective ... read more

Having been in a variety of different learning situations myself and further exposed to them as a teacher, I have a keen appreciation for different learning styles. As such, I strive to adapt my style and resources to both the needs and learning style of the students, whether it be on an individual or group basis. I also recognize the need for patience above all, as everyone learns at different paces; in this regard I am well suited to the teaching environment, as I am not only a patient person by nature, but have striven to make myself even more so in my several years experience teaching.
In addition to writing countless essays during my time as an English literature student, I worked as a residence hall tutor for my last two years of university, helping other students revise and edit their academic papers for grammar, structure, flow and ideas.
