My comments on tutoring Entrance Exams : Exams all come down to prep and organization!

I obtained a B.S. in Biology, with a concentration in aquatic science, from Wittenberg University in 2006. During my undergraduate studies, I tutored elementary students in math and science twice a week for two years. After college, I moved into the marine science profession. In August of 2008, I started teaching High School Biology I, Earth and Space Science, and Physical Science to students in Polk County. In addition, after school hours were spent with two students taking AP Biology classes. Both students achieved a 4 or higher on their placement exams. My tutored students reported an increase in their ability to record class notes, study, and take tests. My previous tutoring experiences have included subjects such as; elementary science, elementary math, Algebra (I & II), Geometry, Pre- Calculus, Anatomy, Physiology, Biology (both College and HS level), HS Chemistry, basic w ... read more

My teaching style adapts to the students current level of knowledge. I always model 2 or 3 problems step by step before asking the student to try a problem. A student is comfortable knowing that I have "their backs" and won't let them be frustrated for long. This gives a student confidence to try problems on their own.
I taught in two public high schools in Orange and Osceola Counties in the Central Florida area for 5 years where I earned the Professional Educators Certificate to teach mathematics 6 - 12. For the past 10 years, I have been teaching at a Huntington Learning Center while privately tutoring students from the area middle, high school, and community colleges.

I like the child to feel comfortable with me to where they are at ease and readily ask questions. I prefer to ask the student leading questions to aide them in coming to the conclusion on their own as opposed to simply telling them information. After a few questions have been answered then I am able to help them with the details of problem and a help them build a method for solving similar problems in the future.

A Little Bit About Me...

Being a high school dual-enrolled college student and successfully graduating Summa Cum Laude with my Bachelor’s of Science in Biochemistry from East Carolina University in only three years demonstrates my passion for a higher education. I have been a tutor to my peers in collegiate level classes, as well as a mentor for my 13-year-old sister. I have an extensive Science and Mathematics background as well as a strong passion towards English. Having won many state Math and Science fairs since I was in third grade laid down a strong platform towards efficient study skills and learning styles that enabled me to excel in my educational endeavors.
I love being able to spread my knowledge to aid in one's understandings of a subject. I believe there are countless variations in the way one learns a particular subject. Furthermore, each individual must find the way he or she learns best to ... read more

I rely heavily on Socratic questioning, to strengthen the students own thinking; my goal is for him/her to not need me. I use symbol and concept imagery language to ensure the student is not simply repeating, but seeing and understanding. Learning, especially at the lower levels, need not be boring, and I enjoy teaching through games, and in counter culture environments such as reading on bean bags or under a tree. I am flexible and creative.
For five years I taught swimming lessons. While swimming isnotan academic subject, this experience taught me the essentials of teaching. I worked with a large range of ages, from six months to sixty years. While in college I was a tutor/editor in the writing center all three years. Upon graduation I took two part time jobs tutoring English at elementary and secondary levels, at Knowledge Points of Tampa Bay and Lindamood- Bell learning process ... read more

As an Ivy League graduate, I studied many different fields, including Economics, Sociology, Literature and Visual Art. I graduated as valedictorian of my high school class and scored a 2340/2400 on my SATs (800 Verbal, 800 Writing, 740 Math), as well as 800s on my French SAT II and Math IIC. I have tutored elementary, middle and high school students before, and greatly enjoy the challenge of communicating difficult material in accessible ways to students.
I prepare lesson plans for each lesson so that you as a parent will see what we are covering, and I constantly monitor the student for understanding. With a lifelong interest in math and science, I received a B.S. in Physics and a B.S. in Astrophysics/Astronomy. Numerous lab reports and multimedia presentations have developed my technical writing skills, but also have experience with critical and analytical writing. I have utilized my background to tutor students in math and sciences as well as music, even assisting teachers in coming up with interdisciplinary projects to relate concepts in math and physics.
I have been working with elementary through high school students for the last few years and am able to relate to many age groups. A Little Bit About Me...

I have always had a passion for education, whether it is teaching youth or adults. I have gained about 3 additional years of teaching and now am working in a higher education setting. I hold a degree in special education which focused on the needs of learning disabled students, though required I still maintain the same knowledge of a licensed educator. Along with a degree in special education I own a degree in psychology. Cumulatively, this allows me to grasp a sense of the student’s feelings, emotions and expressions while learning, which in turn makes the session a lot more conducive. I feel I am able to connect with students through their strengths and weaknesses and use that to find the best strategy to ensure excellent learning.

While I was in college I began working as a teachers assistant at a Montessori School, I soon started privately tutoring students after school at the same location. I am a very hard working, organized, and outgoing person. I tutored students in Math, English, History, Behavioral Sciences and also taught private dance lessons.
I was raised in the Montessori teaching environment, so I am very involved with hands-on teaching methods, and relating subjects to real life experiences. I enjoy watching children grow and progress into self-motivated, independent individuals, who are self-confident in many areas. I believe all children no matter what age have the potential to do amazingly well in school and with their education depending on how much individual attention is placed on them, including constant positive reinforcement.

I find that incorporating creative and fun learning techniques into academic lessons greatly improves student motivation. I enjoy learning the strengths and interests of the student in order to create opportunities to help them reach their full potential. I believe in using positive reinforcement and natural incentives in the learning process. My experience has taught me that students need to know the boundaries for classroom behavior. I believe this can be done in a positive, guiding fashion that leads to mutual respect of both teacher and student. Activities and projects help bring learning to life, so I enjoy making decisions together with the student which projects they would like to create. For example, we may create the solar system or learn to do a "Landscape" painting.

A Little Bit About Me...

As an avid tutor I was required to follow the avid tutoring format. Before I joined the program I was unaware of what exactly this entailed. The avid program suggests groups of 5-7 students gather around a table with the avid tutor being placed at the head of the table. My job is not to tutor, but to rather facilitate the learning as students take turns proposing a tutorial question. This proved difficult because several instances I felt the need to "break" the rules in order to truly help a student. From this experience I gained my own "style" of teaching, and it is one that caters to individual needs and individual personalities in order to relate to students on a more personal level.
As a recent college graduate from the University of Central Florida I know what it takes to face a difficult situation and make the best of it. My first two years at a local community college were ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I taught High School English 3 and 4 for two years at Evans High School. Previously, I have tutored peers and students in grades 6-college level in subjects such as algebra, physics, writing, and reading for the FCAT. I am especially skilled in teaching writing and in helping students pass the reading and writing portions of the FCAT. I have also taught children aged 2-12 in church based classes and day camps.
My personal philosophy about education blends guided practice, academic rigor, and personal discipline with student autonomy, creativity, and exploration. I not only teach students how to complete a task but also how to become self-assessing so they can have success long after the tutoring session is over. I relate well to students of all ages and have the patience to explain, illustrate, or demonstrate a concept in multiple ways until I find the one the student understands. ... read more
