A Little Bit About Me...

I have over a decade of experience working with both regular education students and those with exceptionalities. I have worked with elementary and middle school level students in all subject areas. My strengths are in reading and math. I am ESOL endorsed and can help children struggling with English experience success.
I believe students have different learning styles, and I can adapt lessons based on their individual style and needs. I can challenge students without overwhelming them and causing balking or "burnout". I quickly establish a rapport by making the student feel at ease. By identifying the student's strengths and weaknesses I can help them without wasting time on skills they already have.

My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I have over 15 years of tutoring experience, over 5 years of Academic Teaching Experience, which includes being a Student Advocate and Para-Educator. I have a degree in Psychology, and one of my focus is Learning Disabilities, ADD/ADHD, and Behavioral Modification. While working as a Student Advocate I had to: Work with at-risk elementary children Motivate children to learn and improve their conditions Meet with students one-on-one-, in groups settings, and do classroom presentations on character building lessons. Behavioral management and discipline plans Keep track on truancy problems Conduct Suicide Prevention Groups. As a Para-Educator my tasks included: Help elementary students from 2nd grade to 6th grade in their writing and reading skills. Work with students who have moderate to severe disabilities (learning, physical, and mental disabilities). Teaching functional and academic skills. Work with students in small groups. Use appropriate techniques for student and classroom management. Direct small groups of students in various areas of academics.

I have always enjoyed teaching and helping others to learn. I don't believe in "I can't do it" or "I can't learn". I believe that anyone can learn anything as long as they're willing to learn and put an effort to do so. What is different is that some people have more ability than other to learn certain tasks, but eventually, everyone can learn. It is all a matter of adapting oneself to the student's need and ability to learn. My goal is to make the student learn what they set up their mind to learn in the first place, and help them improve their condition. It is very rewarding to see that you have made a difference in their lives.

My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I can help you with techniques you are practicing from your therapist and teacher, as well as offer you techniques that have worked with my students in the past.

I have extensive experience as a k-12 and adult teacher of all subjects (excepting advanced math and science) and as a teacher of technology to all ages, including technophobes:) I offer specific subject tutoring, as well as project-based enrichment programs tailored to a student's interest. My experience is wide-ranging. I have taught home school groups in mixed age groups, created a wilderness eco-learning program in Hawaii, and managed a computer lab for middle/high school students that also trained teachers and developed technology-based curriculum. I love to teach:)

Very hands on type of person. I am the type of person that needs visual reminders to get my work done. I know that everyone learns in different capacities so I try to incorporate that into my teaching style. I work on identifying the students learning style and then we go from there.
I am currently working at Challenger 7 Elementary School as the only Guidance Counselor. I have created a study group club with students that need study skills, organizational skills or assistance getting their work done! I have been employed as a substitute teacher and mental health counselor in the past. I enjoy working with students because a lot of their stress is due to frustration of not knowing a concept. If you work with the students on their frustration you begin to see improvement in their grades!

I rely heavily on Socratic questioning, to strengthen the students own thinking; my goal is for him/her to not need me. I use symbol and concept imagery language to ensure the student is not simply repeating, but seeing and understanding. Learning, especially at the lower levels, need not be boring, and I enjoy teaching through games, and in counter culture environments such as reading on bean bags or under a tree. I am flexible and creative.
For five years I taught swimming lessons. While swimming isnotan academic subject, this experience taught me the essentials of teaching. I worked with a large range of ages, from six months to sixty years. While in college I was a tutor/editor in the writing center all three years. I like to encourage and support my students. Many students don’t want to learn or do not feel they can succeed. When a student is positive and feels that sense of pride; he will open himself up more to the idea of learning. Secondly, I will always do readings and visuals to stimulate both areas of the brain to ensure it is absorbed. I also believe in repetition of information once a student comprehends what has been learned. Lastly, I like to be consistent. I have always kept the learning styles very similar. I also explain to the student what exactly is expected of him and how I will do things so he will be fully aware. This way we are on the same page as to what the teaching session will entail.
I have always had a passion for education, whether it is teaching youth or adults. I have gained about 3 additional years of teaching and now am working in a higher education setting. I ... read more

Teaching students between 6th and 9th grades has been a joy to me for many years! I am kind, patient, energetic and funny. As an educator, I am one who likes the learning process to be as painless and as enjoyable as it can be, for all involved. However, I am realistic in my knowledge that there are many children who have a negative impression of learning, and may be struggling. However, the challenge of reaching all students is what makes teaching something I love and do well. I am a teacher who loves to get kids excited to learn, to enjoy learning, and to take pride in themselves at what they can accomplish. My personality and experience have been a winning combination in helping kids succeed for many years!

A Little Bit About Me...

While I was in college I began working as a teachers assistant at a Montessori School, I soon started privately tutoring students after school at the same location. I am a very hard working, organized, and outgoing person. I tutored students in Math, English, History, Behavioral Sciences and also taught private dance lessons.
I was raised in the Montessori teaching environment, so I am very involved with hands-on teaching methods, and relating subjects to real life experiences. I enjoy watching children grow and progress into self-motivated, independent individuals, who are self-confident in many areas. I believe all children no matter what age have the potential to do amazingly well in school and with their education depending on how much individual attention is placed on them, including constant positive reinforcement.

I am a patient teacher who can make learning fun for children while meeting their individual needs. Since no two children are alike, each child requires different stategies in order to meet their ongoing educational needs. I believe in using manipulatives when necessary so that a child can receive hands on instruction in understanding mathematical concepts. My reading belief is based on students learning basic phonics and syllable division in order to progress to reading for understanding. Children love me and I am available to help your child find academic success. All children can learn given the appropriate surroundings, resources, and experiences.

Since I myself did not learn the same way as other kids when I was a child, I find that it is easy for me to relate to my students. The best thing a teacher or tutor can do is listen and be patient. Every child can learn, it’s just a matter of how. Many of my students have been hands on learners. Even while reading they had to physically touch something in order for it to make sense to them. I always try to find what fits them best and go with it, whether it’s learning geometry from a skateboard or reading while counting out syllables on blocks. All that matters is that it works for them.

My expectation is that all students will succeed, to have good classroom management, and to design lessons to help students reach mastery. My goal is to create self-aware, self-reliant, and self-governing for all students. A number of students are not aware of the importance of reading being a verbal intelligence. This was accomplished by increasing the motivation of students' interest by providing the necessary preparation to support students' reading comprehension. My responsibility is to equip students with strategies and skills that will open many opportunities for then in the future.
