I believe that science has a undeserved reputation for difficulty as a subject that is directly related to the inability of many teachers to "break it down". Science can seem to be like a foreign language to the uninitiated, but at its essence science is simply a way of thinking about the world and asking questions. Several themes appear again and again in concepts that on the surface may seem unrelated and it is recognizing these themes that is the key to success in building knowledge and confidence. My teaching philosophy is to point out these common threads binding various topics in science and relate it to the real world as quickly as possible, always with the goal of breaking it down to its simplest explanation.

Science, and in particular, Biology, has always been a passion of mine. It is my professional goal to increase the science literacy level for my community by sharing my experiences and knowledge with students at the high school level. In addition to completing the course work required to obtain a Biology Education degree, I have taught in a pilot school for a standard based curriculum in which units were presented in nine-week segments, allowing for quarterly benchmark assessment of student achievement. I have earned a Doctoral degree in Medicine and a Masters degree in Public Health concentrating in Epidemiology and Bioststatistics. As a research scientist, some of the subjects that I had to do well in were math, biology, chemistry and physics. I supervise various levels of our staff and have been told by my peers that I am a good teacher.
I enjoy teaching and tutoring others. I am from a family of four, and as the eldest child I tutored all my siblings in science subject areas were they had difficulties. I like to help kids that have an interest in science. I try to instill the enjoyment I have for the subject.
