My comments on tutoring Grammar : I have used grammar while writing for my doctoral degree. I also teach grammar as a subject in school for 30 years.

I have tutored in both Robeson County and Cumberland County for a total of six years. I tutored students in math, reading and science from grades Kindergarten to sixth grade. We also prepared students in grades three through six for the End of the Year test. We taught test taking strategies as well. In addition, I have tutored students that attend college in American Government and World History. I also, tutored in GA for three years. There I tutored various age groups in writing, reading, math, test strategies, and Microsoft Office. Lastly, I currently tutor students of various ages in math, reading, science, social studies, and writing.
I use a combination of both online games and Websites and hands-on manipulatives. First, I like for the student to take multiple intelligence tests and then I know how best to help the student. The information I gain from the analysis is extrem ... read more

Grammar is one of my top subjects! This is one of my best teaching skills. I have been teaching some form of grammar every year since I have graduated from college.

I have taught for many years in all levels of secondary school, alternative schools, and tutoring centers.I eat, sleep, and drink tutoring as I tutor every day during the school year and do lots of research to help my kids in whatever academic subject is causing them difficulty. I began my teaching career for the first five years as a high school English teacher and taught regular college prep English courses. The next five years I taught English at the middle school level.Next, I got married and resigned from teaching when our first child was born. For the next twenty!!years, I raised four children and tutored kids sporadically. After all the kids had entered school, I began substituting in our school district and substituted everyday in the high schools and middle schools. During some of the summers, I taught secondary English for the district. In 2009, I left the school distri ... read more

I believe in Constructivism, whereby rudimentary skills are continually built upon; a combination of rote learning and discovery-based learning built upon a mastery of previously-learned concepts, plus testing in real-world scenarios to activate within the student the ability to apply learning through analysis and thought coupled with experimentation.
As one who holds a Bachelor's and Master's in the arts, I believe in the power of exploratory learning. However, as one who has spent considerable time working in computers and networking, I value the attainment of hard knowledge. When the two are combined according to a student's particular learning modality(ies), then learning become meaningful and accelerated. In my professional career I was largely self-taught. My success depended upon my ability to learn new concepts based upon my current knowledge set, and to continue growing ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy helping students find the writer within them! For example, a few of my own children were reluctant writers, so I developed a daily routine of assigning them to write a full page about anything they desired. The creativity surfaced with a vengeance, let me tell you! Showing the most resistant student how to grab the bull by its proverbial horns and conquer his fear of writing is so rewarding. Helping the academically-motivated, older student to shine as a writer is also a great feeling. Writing is the type of skill that is critical to all other subjects, and I love to equip students with a solid skill set!
As a junior and senior in college, my research papers consistently received the highest grades ever awarded by a certain professor with a reputation for being the toughest on campus. I subsequently became a successful trade journalist and marketing communications writer wi ... read more

I teach from the known to the unknown (i.e. taking a concept that is already known, or an everyday activity, and relating it to new concepts. I believe that everyone is teachable, if the student has the desire and the teacher has the commitment. I tend to be a patient teacher, with high standards. I actively question the student, which allows me to challenge the student in my presence, where I am able to guide him/her. While I have predominantly tutored college students, I have also taught adults and children. My sister-in-law is probably my biggest supporter, since she has watched me teach my nephews (now 9 and 10) an array of subjects over the years. I believe encouragement is an extremely useful tool, which when used properly can make a remarkable difference.

While passion is essential to create a positive learning-centered environment, I believe a successful instructor must also encourage an open, meaningful dialogue with students, ensure class cooperation and active learning, provide timely instruction and feedback and respect that each student will have a different way of learning. I have high expectations of my students and encourage them to have high expectations of me as well.
