My comments on tutoring Desktop Publishing : I have taken courses in almost all the Adobe Suite interfaces. I design t-shirts and use Adobe Products quite a bit.

I have excellent communication skills and I have taken the coursework to be a Social Studies Teacher from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. I believe that presenting material that fits one's learning style is a key to success in difficult subjects. Patience and flexibility are 2 attributes I possess and I believe is must in teaching subjects to people who's learning style do not work well with the established regimen. Everyone thinks and processes information in an individual style and I believe in trying to find that style. My teaching experience began during high school when I would help out at my church's Sunday School providing remedial services like handing out papers. Since then I have earned a bachelor's degree in finance and economics with ambitions to earn a PhD. During my undergraduate experience I tutored beginning accounting students for a couple hours a week aside from the usual work of helping classmates. During my undergrad studies at UWRF, I was sponsored to become a tutor in the Writing Center on campus. There was a prerequisite practicum, but it was very hands-on learning. I worked with students from a variety of backgrounds (ESL, freshman comp, MS candidates, etc). At Metro State I participated in a semester program teaching English in Puerto Rico, for which I received the ESL certification. I also TA'd for Writing and Designing for the Web.

I would work with a particular student on a one on one basis to address specific questions that they might have on the subject matter.

This year I taught math at Community of Peace Charter school in St. Paul, MN. I taught 3 sections of 8th grade math to a very diverse student population. Approximately 25% of the students receive ESL services outside of the math class, therefore I learned the difficulties that these students have with math vocab and context situations. I dealt with the broad range of math skills by running a math workshop model during the classroom blocks. This was very successful and was well liked by the students.
I am not a 'stand and lecture' type of teacher. Students learn best by trying math skills by themselves or working with other students. I use web math applets frequently and math video clips which appeals to the digital-native students of today.

Education has to be interactive to be effective. I try to apply a Socratic approach when I work with students - to not provide answers but to draw out answers from the student by directed questioning. In the areas that I am competent in (physics into the undergraduate levels, and mathematics through the calculus level), I believe that understanding principles is what enables success. These fields require the development of physical and numerical intuition and pure memorization of facts is rarely successful. Such intuition is acquired through problem solving in conjunction with discussion of the topic.
