I have been providing tutorial services for more than 10 years. My first tutorial assignment was at Edgecombe Community College in 1993. I worked one-on-one with students that were having difficulty in College Mathematics, Computer Technology, and Chemistry. Within the same year I also worked at Nash Community College tutoring students in Electronics Technology and Mathematics. In 1999, I taught middle school math. Based on my college transcripts, which displayed my engineering math courses, I was immediately promoted to teaching high school mathematics. Most of the students I taught where underachievers, repeaters, or transfers from AP courses. I try to take this same approach myself to figure out what is important to students and play on their interests and strengths to help them learn. I typically try a couple of different styles, like flash card memorization, word association (sometimes seemingly unrelated but the funnier and more obscure they are, tend to stick in the memory better), picture association, etc. Having effective discussions about subject matters, particularly with difficult topics, can help the student gain a more in depth understanding.
