I used to hate math, now I love it.

I received a BS in Horticulture from Va. Polytechnic Institute and State University. majored in Biology (Botany) for 3 years at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. and College of William and Mary. Recently retook Precalculus, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, and Calculus 3 at Virginia Western Community College. I have a background tutoring and running a tutoring center for STEM subjects at a community college for 3 years. I have been tutoring in some form for 6 years. I have a certification in tutoring ESL and several years experience in that.
i am pretty relaxed and informal, but I expect students to do the work assigned. I help, but I don't do the work for them. I use Socratic questioning to get students to understand the material. I stress learning concepts and building on them as opposed to memorizing or guessing enough to pass a test.

A Little Bit About Me...

I really enjoy working with young teens. I have worked in high schools for 25 years in Virginia and West Virginia. I have always had good rapport with teens and have enjoyed interacting with them. I have been trained in the Constructivist approach to teaching, but have had to change my style of teaching in order to cover materials necessary for SOL testing in recent years. I know that students retain more knowledge when they are involved in discovering new information and would love to have the latitude to teach in that manner again. I feel like I have made a difference in many young people's lives throughout my career.
I have taught just about all secondary levels of science throughout my teaching career. I have typically worked in county schools where each member of the department had to take on multiple tasks. I have taught chemistry, physics, biology, earth science, environment ... read more

I love to assist, teach, and be around kids. Throughout high school and college I have enjoyed helping and watching kids. I think that all kids should be given an equal opportunity to thrive and succeed in their education no matter where they are from or their upbringing. I would love to continue with my biology studies by helping younger kids learn the ins and outs of biology assisting them in any way that I can.

I am a senior studying Animal and Poultry Sciences at Virginia Tech. I have always had a personal passion for education and have enjoyed spreading the joys of learning and understanding to my peers, siblings, and friends. I excel in the subject areas of Math and Science, however have extensive writing skills.
The greatest reward one can achieve is to see the smile on someones face when they have found success in understanding something they felt impossible. I feel that there is no single method to learning, instead it is each individuals character that defines their own learning methods. I like to seek out what drives an individual to help them find their own passion about learning. With everything I do in life I go 150% and never give up. I hope that I can spread this outlook and motivation to others and help them find the true value in their education.

After graduating from Virginia Tech in 1973, I decided that I would enter the field of public education. After 6 years of successful and rewarding experiences in secondary education, I decided to return to college and obtain a Masters Degree in Education. I believe that if a student wants to learn, they can accomplish anything. As an educator, it is my responsibility to help all students accomplish their individual goals. The learning process is one of my favorite things to witness because it can occur at any time in any place. The incredible part of teaching is that the educator also learns. Every student has a specific way of learning that works best for them. When the educator can identify a learning style that enhances understanding, that is when real learning takes place. I believe in focusing on discovery learning using 21st century skills and tools. It is important to prepare students with the knowledge that will make them competitors in the career field of their choice.
