Students often find that they can comprehend and retain material better when they are engaged in the learning process. Just like learning how to ride a bicycle or play a musical instrument or sport, self-feedback is an important part of the process. This is also true with mathematics and science. Rather than lecture or force rote memorization, I prefer to use a question and answer style that helps guide the student through the concepts being studied. This also helps discover where there may be gaps in the student's knowledge, so that additional focus can be provided where necessary. When explaining concepts to students in classes that I sub-taught I felt the best approach was to talk to individual students and use a whiteboard to clearly explain the concepts. I usually would give hints or start the problem, and then I would look for the student to add insight on how to progress. I also feel that teaching is an adaptive process and each student has their own learning personality that the teacher needs to recognize and adjust to. Asking questions throughout the learning process and maintaining a positive attitude also aid the learning process.
