When I teach, I try my best to be open minded, and to give choices to the student, rather than follow a closed-box cookie cutter curriculum. I've found it's important to find a personal way of learning for a specific student. Variety is important, because every child learns a little differently. Some kids learn by listening, others by seeing. Some kids learn only when they're making things. Encouragement and recognition when progress is attained by the student is a great incentive.

Tutor for the summer

I am a speech therapist with 11 years and experience. I have worked with students pre-k through 12th grade, primarily pre-k through 5th grade. I have extensive experience working with students on reading comprehension, answering and asking questions, semantics of language (antonyms, synonyms, multiple meanings of words, attributes, categorization), syntax, grammar, phonics and much more! I have mainly worked with kids with disabilities, including autism, developmental delays, communication delays, speech and language impairment, and Down Syndrome. I was a senior scientist - engineer for 37 years. I retired to care for my comatose wife at home, and she died a few months later. This situation has left me open to new directions. Helping students learn and learn how to grow

My teaching experience is broad across subjects and age levels. Learning and teaching excite me and I like to think that attitude rubs off on my students. It can be fun to learn, and even those subjects a student does not find enjoyable, can prove satisfying. I knew I wanted to teach at grade 5. All my education from that time on was directed to become a teacher. During my graduate work at the University of Oregon I majored in Reading. It has become my passion to help all students love reading and become comfortable reading. This passion has been driven by the fact that I am dyslexic and understand how difficult it is to not be able to read well.
