To me chemistry has always been an exciting but often misunderstood science. The average person doesn't realize how much chemistry is around them and how chemistry is a fundamenal part of nature. I believe that relating chemistry to our everyday lives can be fundamental to having a better appreciation of the science. Getting the student recognize this can elp to instill a greater desire to master the subject. PC's have gone from a curiosity to now be a neccessity. Although software packages keep getting larger, they tend to operate in the same manner. My fascination for math and science started right before high school level, which drove me to have the Ph.D. degree in chemistry. As an Organic Chemist, I know the subject very well and had gained extensive teaching and research experiences at undergrad and graduate levels.

The most important of the factors are the subject matter and the students learning style. The learning style of the student has to be considered when teaching. Helping a student learn requires finding the most effective method. You want to make sure they understand the subject matter while exposing them to other possible ways to approach difficult problems. I learn visually and like to teach that way. I believe there is a great deal of concepts and memorization in Chemistry. I am not able to memorize all of the subject and would not ask a student to. Instead, explanation and demonstration of the concept, followed by memorization of the rule grants a greater understanding. The rule can then be applied to other areas and is worth much more than a large volume of memorized information. This is possibly more true in the fields of Math and Physics, learning rules and concepts goes a long way. I prefer to patiently explain, draw, or demonstrate the concept at hand then work on problems that further illustrate that concept.
