Personally, I prefer hands on - lab style workshops - than endless lecturing and note taking. I like to grasp the student's maturity level and aptitude and go from there. All students need individualized attention, but it is also important to have team building skills inherent in the coursework so they learn to both help themselves and others. The first thing is to teach the love of learning, the second is 'how to learn,' and the third thing is the motivation to develop mastery. Ever since I was in the 5th grade I have known I wanted to teach. I spent my undergraduate career building a foundation of knowledge for this goal and got involved in tutoring a variety of students. I even taught a class of girls at the local juvenile prison. I earned my BA and went straight to my M.Ed, building even more on my already strong foundation. I prefer to approach every student very slowly in the beginning to understand exactly where their trouble are. Listening is the most important attribute that a tutor can have followed by patience. I worked as a math tutor as a student worker during my last 3 years of college while working on my BS in Computer Science until 2004. I had previously studied at the Milwaukee School of Engineering and had an extensive background in Math. I taught at a Catholic High School, Messmer, for one year after graduation until 2005, before returning to ITT as an adjunct instructor. As a recent graduate. I have tutored many of my friends for free when attending UCSD. I have also tutored as a private tutor in high school, and for a few months during college.
