My comments on tutoring English : SAT Reading Comprehension and Composition

I have been teaching the SAT for the past 12 years [part time]. For the first five years I was an classroom instructor for Studyworks, Inc. [competitor of Kaplan and Princeton]. When Studyworks left California, I continued by tutoring the brothers and sisters of my classroom students. I started in the teaching field by instructing Vietnamese how to speak English in French. I spent another five years teaching aircraft systems and serving as an instructor pilot in the Air Force.
In contrast to many of the other tutors, I would not presume to even imply that I could teach your student either math or English in a few hours of tutoring. What I can do is teach your student to be very 'test wise', teach them some easily applied techniques that will get them successfully past most of the math/geometry problems, teach them how to use the grading bias to score well on a less than stellar ... read more

I am currently a professional journalist, but spent almost 10 years in three different California school districts. I write for two different newspapers in San Diego, as well as a local television station. I am well-versed in grammar, punctuation, spelling and all other aspects of creative writing. My comments on tutoring English : I encourage students to be familiar with different writing styles and to discover authors they enjoy. Literature is part of any English program.

I have taught grades 3 and six as part of my internship in Messina, New York. I tutored third grade children in remedial reading as a private business. After raising my own children and working in industry I returned to teaching. I taught ESL to adults in Boston, MA and as part of Literacy,Inc in Escondido, CA. I have tutored third grade students in reading as part of Oasis Program. I currently home school a third grade boy in all subjects. My students have enjoyed my classes and found learning can boost their confidence.
I believe a strong emphasis on spelling, grammar and comprehension is key to future learning. I approach these subjects from different angles so that it does stay interesting. I believe in bolstering self confidence and yet encourage students to put effort into their lessons.

I have tutored for a non-profit organization, Life Christian Church, as an after school program on Wednesdays free to the community. I have also taught English and History to home school students. One of the biggest accomplishments was watching of the students who detested writing papers because he did not believe he could do it, grow into a man who is not writing weekly papers confidently. A Little Bit About Me...

I am what you might call a camp kid. I grew up spending summers in the mountains, camping and hiking and when I grew older, working. The foundation of my leadership experience was built in the forrest. For six summers I worked as an outdoor educator and adventure guide, leading groups of students through week long trips into the natural world. I believe in experience as the greatest teacher.
