I worked as a Math Tutor throughout college. Since graduating I have occasionally worked with students in a tutoring center and I have helped my own children and their friends in a home setting. I have helped teachers grade homework and I have helped algebra, geometry, and calculus students complete their homework.
I believe that learning Math is really very similar to learning a foreign language. I see my job as helping students to become familiar with the "words" and grammar of math so that they can learn to read, understand, and write the language of numbers.

My teaching style consists of consistency, understanding, consideration, connection and positive acknowledgement. All children need consistency to help with academic success. This means a certain time, environment, etc. in which they study or learn. Understanding refers to the fact that not all children study or learn the same so this is pertinent in order to learn and accomodate each child you help. Consideration is being open to different situations and learning blocks each child may have; be considerate to each child's needs. Connection refers to the fact that children and their parents must be able to trust you and know that you will help their children to the best of your ability and unleash their true potential. Positive acknowledgement refers to the postive "praise" or reinforcement of achievements. This drives children to want to do better and instills self-confidence and ... read more

I am a graduate of UC San Diego earning a BS in Structural Engineering. I have a strong grasp of the math and science fields, and how concepts from each discipline overlap and interconnect. In addition to my own academic pursuits I have tutored and worked in the classroom environment with students ranging from grades 1-6.
I am a firm believer that each and every student has equal ability to succeed in their academic pursuits. It is up to the teacher to provide the tools and environment that enables the student to flourish. Not only does a good teacher educate the child, but they also motivate the student to further pursue academic achievements. I believe in giving students the tools needed to solve current and future problems, not just a quick solution.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate of Sociology I have gained a lot of knowledge about how society functions. I was interested in this area of study to understand peoples because I have always had compassion for others. I have participated in a 4 unit class where i taught Spanish to 8-11 year old children and it consisted of developing a plan that included songs and dancing to learn Spanish in a fun and animated way. I have done research on homelessness, and had an internship with a non profit that provides social services for those in need. Working closely with this organization has helped me assess peoples needs and use problem solving skills to help individuals in a variety of situations.
I enjoy teaching and working with children and feel that it is important to understand that not all students learn the same way. I feel that my college experience has taught me to discover the ways I learn and und ... read more

I strongly believe that all mathematical and statistical concepts can be explained and illustrated by the appropriate example. If a student understands how a certain statistical problem looks like in a small example, he or she will be able to describe the problem and the solution in an abstract formulation as well. I put a lot of effort in finding easy examples and then proceed in as little steps as necessary to the more abstract formulation. Also, I make sure to take the student with me on every of these steps. If tutor and student find the right pace, math and statistics can become a fascinating journey.
I have enjoyed working with numbers all my life. As a high school student, I took part in international math competitions. Later, I earned a Master’s degree in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Statistical Genetics. I taught several semester-long practice/lab classes for math majors a ... read more

Like everything I do in life, I like to have a plan to go about working through situations. I have had many years as a chemistry tutor and I have come across many different people with different issues when it comes to learning chemistry. My understanding of chemistry allows me to approach a problem from different angles to help the tutee understand the problem. I believe anyone is capable of learning chemistry and I have seen many students who struggled with the subject turn their grades around. When I was a student, I had many inspirational teachers, and I for one would like to give back to the educational system and benefit people and inspire them to do well in chemistry and in their educational career in general.
As a recent graduate of the CSU East Bay chemistry program, I was given the opportunity to have personal instruction from many different professors. I was able to ... read more

I loved teaching in the classroom setting and will probably go back to that someday, but I have found a real passion and excitement these last two years working one-on-one with students. I enjoy getting to know students, discovering their strengths and weaknesses and using both to help them become lifetime learners. I feel strongly that students who struggle with reading, spelling and comprehension should receive special help at an early age and that the right methods can give them the skills they need to be successful in the future. I look forward to giving students the opportunity to succeed!

I derive a lot of pleasure from communicating with my students and helping them with problem solving in Math and Physics, especially on a one-on-one basis. I am open, patient and interactive. Instead merely providing answers to a problem, I like to ask questions that inspire my students and help them develope a thought process for similar problems in the future. I am also a very easy going person and I believe in building the students confidence by giving constructive feedbacks along the way. A lot of us have encountered problems with Science in high school and college. With my indepth knowledge in Physics and Math and years of experience in teaching, I believe I can make a positive difference to the community.
