I have successfully completed a Beacon tutor course in preparation for individual and group tutor sessions. I led a semester long Beacon tutoring supplement course in Organic Chemistry that supported 20 junior college students. I have effectively tutored/mentored a number of high school students in general education coursework, organizational skills, and in preparation for exit examinations. I have conducted community based math group sessions for junior high and high school students. Finally, I have supported 1st and 2nd grade elementary school students in math and reading comprehension. I have worked with a huge diversity of students and I find that students remember, relate, connect and understand metaphors, examples, and models best. So I tell my students stories about what they see in the world around them, relating lessons to the news, and showing examples that are so cool they cannot be forgotten! I love tutoring because my specialty is identifying the source of confusion a student might have in a given lesson and using my knowledge and experience to explain the science in a different way. Since then I have worked in a summer program tutoring elementary ESL students, gone on to graduate with degrees in English and Environmental Studies, and most recently, worked as an Americorps member at Andersen Elementary and Open in Minneapolis. During my undergrad studies, I began tutoring with children (usually 1-2 at a time) from pre-school age with phonics and sight reading until the present time with reading, writing, math, science and history. I have also worked in a private girls school as an After School Study Hall teacher for Grades 5-8 and presently I am a Substitute teacher for Grades K-6 in a self-contained classroom.
