I started substitute teaching in 1983 while I was working on my Master's Degree at California State University, Long Beach. I have been a substitute teacher in Long Beach, Santa Barbara, Glendale, and Palm Springs. I have had experience as a long term substitute in Senior English for a year at Palm Springs High School, also in Palm Springs, I did six months as a Special Education teacher at Cree Middle School. I am a hands on conceptual style learner and like to teach the same way, I believe that students that can see the "why" can understand and retain what they learn. Engaging learners by using hands on activites can facilitate the learning process. I am a retired teacher, middle school, high school and district office administrator. It is important for me to determine what motivates each student to learn, what their interests are and what is important to them. I wanted the student to see how each lesson was valuable to their future success. I always got my students involved in the classroom with open discussions. Each week my students gave a five minute presentation on a subject of their choise, building their self confidence along with their reading, writing and speaking skills.
