A Little Bit About Me...

I was taught to teach by "Socratic Method" which is possibly the best way to teach/tutor. I ask many questions to check the students responsiveness and understanding of key areas of the topics including a reinforcing of the ideas being learned. I cannot count how many students I have had come in frustrated and confused and then quickly answer questions that were simple and built up to understanding harder ideas by the end of a session. And the best award of all is seeing joy and elation that they have a good chance of getting a high grade after learning material. "Socratic Method" is the best proof a tutor can see that a student is learning and has learned what they have been taught.

I enjoy working with children and feel that they each have their own individual learning style. At times, I feel that conventional educational methods may fail some children. Educators must learn to be flexible, and allow students to learn in the style that they feel most comfortable. As a tutor, I feel that establishing a good rapport/friendship with my students before trying to "teach" them anything has been the most successful. If a child feels that you understand them and are interested and invested in their lives, you can become much more skillful at helping them to learn.
As a tutor, I owe the students in my cohort the very best! I am committed to providing our children with the very best educational quality that I can, and am constantly try to improve upon my own skills. I have always loved helping people, especially in the way of education. I believe that everyone learns differently, and therefore strive for diversity in teaching. I will exhaust all possible strategies, incorporating meaning and practice with all dimensions of learning to bring not only an undertanding of content, but an appreciation and means of applying newly gained knowledge in real world situations.
Having completed my B.A. in Mathematics, with a minor in adolescent education, a Computer Science degree, and graduating with a 3.65 GPA, and a 4.0 in content has fueled my success. Combining that with presently finishing my Masters in Teaching with Technology, three years of teaching mathematics and 5 years of tutoring experience, in which I tutored several subjects I feel that I have a lot to add to the success of students. I like to combine both direct instruction and hands-on activities when teaching. I believe that allowing students to apply their learning to real-life situations helps them to both find meaning in their learning and attach the learning to a memorable experience. I get really excited about the subjects that I teach and my excitement carries over to my students. And, when students are excited about what they are learning, they want to continue to learn more about that particular subject.
I have been a teacher for over six years. I have taught and/or tutored subjects ranging from elementary reading and math to high school math and science. I am permanently certified in New York State to teach Biology and general science. In addition, I am pursuing certificates in both physics and math.

As far back as I can remember, I have always helped the people around me with their schoolwork: classmates, friends, family, anyone who is struggling unnecessarily. I enjoy teaching, and have been tutoring on a professional basis for well over 10 years now. I specialize in college level mathematics, but I have also tutored students in physics, chemistry, computer science, economics, engineering, and any related fields. I have tutored students in elementary school, high school, undergraduate and graduate level college, and occasionally professionals in need of assistance with some aspect of their work.
All students have different learning styles, and the greatest advantage of one-on-one tutoring or small-group learning sessions is that the instruction can be adopted to each individual student's needs. A Little Bit About Me...

As an Honors Student at Utica College, and as a past tutor, I feel very comfortable in the teaching setting. My long term goal is to enter the doctorate program at Syracuse University so that I may teach at the college level in the future. My BS in accounting with CPA concentration has given me the knowledge and skills that would allow me to be an excellent tutor in the specific area. In the last five years, I have tutored math, accounting, macro and micro economics. As a recent college graduate, I understand the difficulties that students face when they confronted with a subject that proves difficult for them to master. In the past five years of my college education I have also mastered the art of writing effective term and research papers using proper citation styles. I have always enjoyed tutoring, and I look forward to becoming a professor at the college level.

I believe it is essential to have the ability to adapt your teaching style to the student's skill set, especially when tutoring. My strength as a teacher comes from my ability to assess where each student has weaknesses and correct those weaknesses. I believe that with patience and hard work all students can learn and have positive educational experiences.

Learning and teaching is my passion. In high school it ws teachers with the same passion that made learning fun and encouraged me to achieve academic success. Most any subject can be made interesting if approached the right way. Mostly it is about patience and good respectful communication. I especially cherish working with young children who are usually starving for real knowlege, but are lacking the opportunity to engage their minds in a meaningful way. I have found that with kids, you get back in effort what you put in.
In college, I in part supported myself by tutoring in math and organic chemistry. I have earned a BS in Biology and a Doctorate in Medicine (but I am retired from clinical practice). After that I tutored Math, Earth Science, Physics, and Philosophy to other undergrads at my college's Learning Center. More recently I have been a coach of my own children's baseball and football teams, and a volunteer tutoring math and science at a local private school.
I believe that people have different preferred learning styles. Some are visual learners, some audio, some physical, and some use pure intellect. Often, class size prohibits even very good educators from catering to the need of each individual's learning style. It is therefore my job to present subject matter by whatever means necessary for my client's learning to flourish, and to facilitate their mastery of the material ... read more
