I have eight years experience in the public school classroom. The majority of my experience has been in fourth grade, but I have also had the opportunity to teach fifth and third grades. My classrooms have always been self-contained, meaning that I have taught all subjects. I am extremely familiar with the North Carolina teaching standards and requirements of elementary students. The goal of reading is understanding written print. I have spent many years as a Reading Specialist working with small groups on their comprehension. Many were having difficulty in their assessments. Whether in K-2 or preparing for benchmark tests in 3-5, I take comprehension one step at a time. I also plan according to students' interests, which always helps understanding the written print! I have taught in a first and second grade classroom for ten years, and served as a Reading Specialist for k-5 for seven. I have discovered that the most successful way to teach a child how to read is gaining their interest and full attention, while observing what learning style is best for each individual child.
