My comments on tutoring ADD/ADHD : I believe my volunteer work with children and my advanced degree in psychology are advantageous for assisting individuals with ADD and ADHD.

I think teaching styles should differ based on the preferred learning style of the student. The teaching style should play on the strengths and preferences of that particular student. That being said, I foster a student-centered approach to learning. This approach encourages the student play an equal, active role in the learning process, rather than a passive role. A cooperative approach is important so the student can feel like he or she is an active and capable participant in learning the material. I also believe in leading by example and allowing the student to use me as a resource for reviewing their work.

I have always loved to teach and have been told by my children that I should have been a teacher. When it comes to math I have found that most people who have trouble with math have simply missed some fundamental along the way. It is extremely rewarding to figure out what that is and fill in that hole. I teach by breaking problems down and asking easier questions that lead to the answer. Every child has a window of time when learning to write and read is at its peak. I’ve observed this can begin as early as three or four years of age. Yet the child who discovers his/her fascination with language at the age of eight is no less gifted.
