A Little Bit About Me...

While attending college I was apart of many different study groups. In such study groups we would teach each other the information we needed to learn. Through this I interacted with many students teaching many things in many different styles. When I was in upper level courses I would assist the underclassmen with their homework so that they could grasp the information.
The style of teaching that I use is experience. I believe that people learn best when they work through and actually practice the issues. For example, in mathematics I believe it is very important to practice math problems. Not to memorize the answers but the memorize the formula for working through a problem. With my years of being around and in an educational environment, I have picked up patterns of repetition and summary to reinforce ideas being conveyed. I, myself, learn best by doing. Through studying adult learning styles, I discovered that studies show utilizing all facets of learning - writing, audio, visual, and hands on - leads to the highest levels of retention. I teach by 1) talking by the student to determine his or her best learning style and 2) utilizing the various methods listed above so that the student can retain the maximum amount of information through his or her best learning style.

My goal in studying linguistics is to become a professional ESL teacher. I am very much interested in language development at all levels, but especially in nonnative language development. I am a native speaker of English, but I am also fluent in Spanish as well. I love to teach and learn language.
