I spent a year overseas right out of high school tutoring my cousins. Later, after college, I volunteered to teach Spanish at a "homeschool" in Oregon for 3 months, then spent 6 months teaching Spanish then guitar at Lane Community College. I have been teaching for the last fifteen years. I started my teaching career in the junior high grades and then decided that my preference would be with the younger children. I have taught both second and third grade and throughly loved both levels. I have attended various classes and workshops relating to helping children learn to read and love doing it. When I was in school, I could always understand or figure out what the teacher was trying to get across. Some students, however, didn’t always understand what was being explained. I was the kid who would rephrase the teacher’s remarks and explain it again in a way that the other students could understand. Not all students understand things in the same way. I am a great believer in Cognitive Constructivist teaching methods. I believe "working with" a new concept or idea is extremely valuable in remembering the target information.
