I do enjoy helping students with their problems. I have a technique of visualization. for example, which is the first example I use. I tell the student to think of a tree. in the seconds you think of a tree, you don't think of just the tree. you think of the roots, the trunk, the limbs, the branches, the leaves. then you think of whats going on in the tree, right down to the point of the tree taking in carbon dioxide and giving off oxygen and water. Why is the tree giving off water. most people do not know that the tree is making water because it is attaching hydrogen to the oxygen to get rid of the hydrogen, acid. I can apply this same visualization to almost anything.

While planning for a career in medicine, I obtained a BS in biology with a minor in Chemistry. During the application and acceptance process I was an adjunct faculty member at a local technical college. My courses taught were remedial Algebra, biology, and anatomy and physiology. During the hours between classes I was a paid Tutor in the college's learning assistance center.
I wouldn't have a "professional" description for teaching style as my education was solidly based in the sciences. However, I believe that by teaching intuitive thought processes and critical thinking skills, students can easily adapt to the tasks given be they in science or liberal arts.

I tend to relate more to content related teaching. As always, "hands on" and experiential learning is always better. When material and lessons can be related to the students, much better success in learning may be achieved. Many of my former students have progressed to the the Academic High School in Charleston and then on to well known Colleges and Universities. There own stories are a testiment to how I teach.
Starting in 1992, I served as an adjunct professor at Johnson & Wales University teaching a 300 level environmental science class, a 100 level general non-major biology class, and also a 100 food sanitation class with a HACCP certification. I am an advocate of self-discovery and prefer to ask questions of my students rather than answer them. I believe that if a student can discover the answer for themselves, rather than being told the answer, they will have a deeper and longer-lasting understanding of the material. I integrate reading and computational skills into my subject matter and use contemporary internet sources to supplement all content items. Practice assignments are designed as reinforcers for the most important skills and topics of the lesson. Homework is for quality, not for quantity.
