I am currently a Biology Major at the University of Southern Maine. I have completed my degree requirements for my BS, I’m finishing up by taking an additional 9 credits this semester before walking for graduation in the Spring, May 2011. During my four years in college I have taken 11 laboratory courses, providing me with extensive knowledge and experience in writing research papers, lab reports and scientific reviews. I have experience in math, reaching a Calculus level; completion of upper level courses in Chemistry, Statistics, and Physics; a variety of liberal arts courses. I was an assistant girl’s high school basketball coach for two years, and have been tutoring high school and college students in math and science for two years. As passionate of a student as I am, I equally enjoy being an active part in another’s understanding and learning towards a new and challenging subject.

My teaching style is student centered based upon their individual learning styles. I am a holistic grader who is able to reach and teach even the most difficult student, such as those who have acquired "learned helplessness". I have the wonderful ability of getting to know my students so that my lessons are based upon their interests. I have been tutoring for 17 years for all ages and levels. I have tutored both in and out of an academic setting, both in schools and at the students home. I am highly qualified to tutor all ages and levels of math, science, english, english language, spanish, writing and SAT prep.

As a female in a predominantly male field I’ve had to formulate a self-teaching method since most of my professors were male and seemed to think and teach in similar ways. My goal when tutoring is to help the student discover which learning methods work best for them whether it’s memorization techniques such as mind-mapping and mnemonic acronyms and/or study skills, for example, establishing a study routine. In the years prior to high school I struggled with math but I had a few excellent teachers (my mother included) that lifted my confidence and taught me that I can achieve my goals through perseverance, encouragement and mentoring. I realized that math is simply a step-wise pattern of correctly followed operations. Being a manager, I have been able to assist entry level, junior, or mid level chemist throughout the years. My approach in the lab has been personable and side by side teaching. As a chemist, I am patient but very thorough. I have been in the pharmaceutical business for 17 years. My chemistry experience has been for the most part in research and development. To be more specific, my area of concentration has been in analytical chemistry and in the transdermal drug delivery arena.
