Chess is one of my top subjects! I have played chess for over a decade and a half, and have taught people of a variety of skill levels ranging from not knowing how to play to advanced strategies and thinking on your feet.

I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I have tutored people ranging from my peers to people three times my age, to as young as third graders. My motto has evolved into "Helping those who feel they can not be helped"
I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.

I find that positive reinforcement of previously acquired skills encourages further learning. I also use creative everyday examples to help students understand topics better. For example, to help a child enhance their reading and math skills I’ll use a cooking activity. I am now in Graduate School trying to achieve my masters in curriculum and instruction. The last couple of courses we have really focused on the 8 intelligences. This provides guidance to teaching every type of learner. So the first thing I would like to do would be to figure out what type of learner I am working with and implement a lesson plan specifically for them.

I am by nature an encourager. I am optimistic every child can learn -- the trick is to spark an interest in the subject and communicate the material to them in an understandable way.
