Chess is one of my top subjects! I have played chess for over a decade and a half, and have taught people of a variety of skill levels ranging from not knowing how to play to advanced strategies and thinking on your feet.

I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I have tutored people ranging from my peers to people three times my age, to as young as third graders. My motto has evolved into "Helping those who feel they can not be helped"
I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.

I graduated in 2007 with my business degree and moved to NC. I worked for a mental health agency helping children in broken homes with school work and being a positive male role model as well as taking pre reqs to return to school for my masters degree in physical therapy. A Little Bit About Me...

I like to get to know the person with whom I am working so I can find the best style for that person. Whether it is visual, auditory or kinetic. I find the way that person learns and then I help them on their level.
Besides my formal education, I have helped many people while working for Disabled Student Services at Florida Community College at Jacksonville. I helped my blind boss understand the needs of her deaf students. I helped a disabled boy with Algebra and I helped my mom with her math when she went back to college. I enjoy helping younger and older people alike.

My teaching style embraces a strength based approach. I start with what my students already know and build from there. I find that positive reinforcement of previously acquired skills encourages further learning. I also use creative everyday examples to help students understand topics better. For example, to help a child enhance their reading and math skills I’ll use a cooking activity. They read the instructions, use the dictionary to look up words they do not understand, and help complete the recipe with measuring, timing, etc. My style allows students to enhance both their knowledge and self-esteem.
I began tutoring others in different academic subjects while at Forest Hills High School. During my time at Dartmouth College I assisted others--primarily with writing assistance. Majoring in Education & African-American Studies, I endeavored to help others take pride in learning ... read more

Having spent 20 years in the Information Technology field, I recently made the decision to change careers to pursue a life-long dream of teaching. I began college as an education major, but due to life circumstances, changed direction and entered the IT field. As programming is math and logic oriented, teaching math is a natural extension of my skills and experience. I am currently working towards gaining licensure as a middle school math teacher. I enjoy working with children of any age and have tutored friends of my own child.
Children have many different learning styles, and as an educator it is my job to discern which approach works best for each individual. In teaching math, I believe that all children learn best with a hands-on approach. Providing real-world examples and manipulatives that children can pick up, touch, and move around should be used at all levels – from ... read more

In the beginning being a doctor was all that I desired. Helping others, tending to their wounds and etc was my dream. It wasn't until I had the honor of tutoring others that I realized, my passion to teach was equally as strong as my passion for medicine. I feel no child is incapable of learning. I am now in Graduate School trying to achieve my masters in curriculum and instruction. The last couple of courses we have really focused on the 8 intelligences. This provides guidance to teaching every type of learner. So the first thing I would like to do would be to figure out what type of learner I am working with and implement a lesson plan specifically for them.

I am by nature an encourager. I am optimistic every child can learn -- the trick is to spark an interest in the subject and communicate the material to them in an understandable way. Learning at its best should be fun and educational, though not necessarily entertaining. Having said that, there are no shortcuts for hardwork and homework and repetitions on problem solving.
I have left the corporate after 18 years to pursue teaching. I have two bachelors degrees in physics & mech. engineering. I want to put these to use and make an impact on kids in my community. I am tutoring at my church and reading education material, along with boning up on science material.
