An Exceptional Teacher for Exceptional Students!

I am a former Special Education teacher from Bibb County. I taught in a interrelated classroom in both the elementary school level, and the middle school level. I taught reading, math, science, and social studies. I was a cooperative teacher, in which I worked with the general education teacher to assist her in helping our students with special needs. In the interrelated classroom, I worked with students who were not able to be mainstreamed in the general education classroom all day. My philosophy of discipline is simple: observe, take data and find the function of the behavior. When a student misbehaves in class there is an underlying reason. Every behavior has a function. The function can be to gain access to an item or person, to avoid doing the work or aggressive behaviors if they do not understand the assignment completely, medicine or personal affects (hungry, sleepy or thirsty). I also believe in “brain breaks”. My students take a break every hour to get up, walk around, listen to music and get the wiggles out. By doing this one simple trick, they are able to concentrate better and have an opportunity to get the wiggles out. I also have “my time versus your time”. During the last 10 years I have worked with all levels of students, preschool through college levels. These areas include reading, math, english, psychology, science and social studies. I am a self starter and have worked with parents when I owned/operated my private daycare. I have since then worked with children in low poverty communities in Atlanta Georgia, in order to provide an alternative method to learning to ensure that children receive the appropriate level of understanding of various subjects.
