I began 'teaching' as the head wakeboarding instructor at Coble Ski School in Lillington, NC, when I was a junior in high school. Shortly thereafter I took a position working at a beach resort in Pensacola, FL, where I spent an entire summer instructing surfing, kayaking and sailing. At Duke I tutored during each of my four years, either biweekly at a local Durham elementary school or at the Emily K Family Life Center. Tutoring is a one on one situation where I don't believe teaching style, as defined by the approach used in the class room, plays a role. Each individual learns differently, and the tutor needs to learn how to reach each of his pupils. The most important task a tutor needs to address is how to help students become self-learners. Knowledge is something you learn yourself, no one can pour it into your head. An open mind is necessary, and negative thoughts about the material and poor self-confidence are distructive.
