English ESOL is one of my top subjects!

I assisted ESL students in various academic subjects since middle school. My first official tutoring position start in the fall 2007, where I tutored students in college-level French and high-school math. My studies abroad in France allowed me to become fluent in the language. In addition to offering private lessons, I have also taught Chinese Schools on the weekends for over 4 yrs. I started out teaching 4 to 6 year-olds at the Xiang Yun Temple. Later, I offer instructions in Mandarin Chinese to heritage students at the Austin Taiwanese Presbyterian Church Chinese School. Until 2014, I've taught non-heritage students in the first level Chinese as Second Language class (CSL Red) at the Austin Chinese School.

Succeed! Alicia is the best dyslexia tutor.

I love what I do. As an educational psychologist, I use a variety of techniques and tailor programs to suit the student’s learning style and level of proficiency. I have had great success teaching dyslexic students, English and Spanish as second languages, and helping prepare students for standardized tests such as the STAAR, SAT, ACT, TOEFL, and TEXES certification exams. I teach reading and writing because I am a good reader and writer, and I know how to help others develop these abilities. I also have a deep understanding of the grammatical structures of two languages, English and Spanish. I can make the most difficult grammatical concepts seem very easy to understand. Reading and writing are fun when you become skilled at them, and with my help, my students get there in no time at all. I do a great job tutoring children. I teach them by playing games, doing fun exercises, wat ... read more

Learn something new every day.

I'm currently a senior at the University of Texas studying Spanish/Portuguese, International Relations and Global Studies, and minoring in European Studies. I began learning Spanish at the age of 3 when I attended an Awty International School in Houston for 7 years and have since continued. I have lived with a host family in Costa Rica the summer of 2007 and again in Brazil the summer of 2010. I speak both fluently.
I can work with what the student needs. Each person learns differently so I can adapt to what style works best. For languages, speaking and repetition is important. I also encourage music and cultural readings of the language to further understand it.

Working with children is my passion! The individual differences of my students is what drives my teaching style. As a general rule, I believe in everyone having the chance to succeed based on success for them personally. Being an educator has helped me to understand the need for teamwork between teachers and their students, parents, colleagues & administration. I find that I am most comfortable when I have the opportunity to be in front of a class of students who are eager to learn and willing to work hard. Children learn by doing, so it has always been my intent to create a hands-on classroom environment. This ensures that students will have experiences to help them expand their skills in all subjects.
I have been a teacher at the elementary level for 6 years. I earned my bachelor's degree from UT-Austin and my teacher certification from LeTourneau University. I completed my ... read more

I adhere to Gardener's Multiple Intelligences, which states that each student possesses certain intelligences and that using a students' strengths improves their achievement. Each student has individual needs, that when nurtured, will allow the student to realize his potential. Students learn differently in different environments, and as an educator, I believe a student learns best when in a comfortable environment, especially with new or challenging material. Most importantly, it is my goal to help students become individual learners and thinkers, to teach them not only content but how to help themselves as well. As a teacher, I had high expectations for all my students, and they reached them when we set manageable goals.
As a graduate of Southwestern University with a Bachelor in English and Communications, I was drawn to the field of education. I come from a family of teachers ... read more

My techniques will be customized to the subject and student population. One of the techniques: I will use exercises and team involvement as additional tools for re-enforcement and opportunity of exchange, so that team spirit and creative opportunities can be encouraged and explored. Students will notice how genuine my interest in education is, as I am an avid learner myself. I will also create an environment of comfort, exchanges, and suggestions. Where the subject materials and school policies allow, I may introduce additional techniques and suggestions.
I have received rigorous instruction as to punctuation, grammar, syntax, and composition rules since my years of mandatory education. The knowledge and application of the same have expanded thanks to the years spent in college and at the university, where I have also had to use the notions in order to effectively communicat ... read more

I am a born teacher, and I love the challenge of bringing students who are less than engaged in the learning process to becoming eager and confident learners. I am patient, though I also believe in setting goals and reaching benchmarks and deadlines. My basic philosophy is that all young people are not only able to learn but also capable of much more than they or their environment may believe. My goal is to increase their confidence by praising their successes, and to hone their skills by expecting rigorous application of their efforts to the learning tasks at hand.
I have been teaching and tutoring students since the 1980's, both in Israel (where I completed my B.A.) and in the United States, first as a graduate student and then as an Assistant Professor of English. After graduating from Trinity University, I joined Teach For America. I received an intensive training while teaching fifth grade math in summer school and then moved to Miami to teach second grade. I taught an inclusion classroom, which helped me become comfortable working with English language learners, as well as students with both learning and emotional disabilities. My students grew an average of 1.1 years in their reading level in seven months, and averaged an 80% on their end of year math assessment. I then moved to rural Nicaragua where I taught English as a second language, developed and initiated a literacy program for primary students, and helped ready secondary students for college.
From my experience, I have learned that every child has the ability to succeed when given the proper tools and taught at the appropriate skill level. Often in the school system, a child str ... read more

I believe that students learn through doing, especially when learning how to write well. I can examine students' work closely, find areas that need polishing, explain why these areas could use improvement, and show them how to avoid problems in the future.
I am currently working as a part-time instructor at Austin Community College teaching Composition I. About a year ago I moved back to Texas from San Diego, where I earned my MA in English and spent several semesters teaching a variety of writing courses at area community colleges, as well as at San Diego State University. As a graduate student, I taught composition courses and worked twenty hours per week as a writing tutor.
