I was a peer tutor at Mount Marty College for three years in Yankton, South Dakota. While there, I tutored college students English, writing, religious studies, critical thinking in ethics, and speech. I love helping students improve their writing skills. I have personally taken the ACT-32, the GRE-80 percentile, and the LSAT-currently awaiting score.
I like to find out what the student's biggest concerns are, clarify any confusion, and then run through practice problems by demonstrating and guiding.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a higher education professional who has come to believe that the best way to impact students is to return to teaching. I have a long-standing interest in the philosophy of teaching. I am particularly impressed by "deep learning," a movement that emphasizes critical thinking and inquiry at all levels of teaching. I also believe in high expectations combined with a strong support system, and a common sense approach to the subject matter. I have come to believe that much "teaching" is nothing more than giving students the illusion that they have learned something; this is evidenced by the "cram and regurgitate" approach often taken by students. In my view, this approach is not true teaching or true learning.
I have a PhD with a major in psychology and a minor in cell biology. I have taught college courses ranging from developmental math to graduate neuroscience. One of my re ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I like starting with the given information and stepping through the processes to solve a problem. Reminding them of, or even showing them, the rules, properties, and examples in the book. I normally try to find the method that best works with each pupil, then highlight on that. I also make sure not to do the work for the student. I will sometimes come up with a similar problem to work through so they can see what's really going on within the problem.
I have tutored Algebra through Calculus I and Elementary Statistics for the last three years. 1.5 years at both Wichita State University and Washburn University. I'm currently working on a second Bachelors degree in mathematics, but this time with an emphasis in Actuarial Science. This mixes calculus, algebra, and statistics, along with some business classes, into one, keeping them fresh in my mind.

As a graduate student at Kansas State University I have learned the value of education. My education in Political Science working towards my BS has given a high degree of competence in math, history, and social sciences. Through my pursuit of an education in an MA in English I have obtained a high degree of grammatical and writing skills through repeated preperation of papers, speaches, and presentations. My experience as an Eagle Scout and at the McConnell Air Force Base Youth Center has taught me to appreciate the potential for education in anyone.
I have always loved teaching and tutoring. Whether it is friends, family, children, or college students, the potential to learn present in anyone has always astounded me. Through encourgment, repetition, and practicallity anyone is capable of learning under a caring teacher. Frustration is often the biggest deterent to anyone see ... read more
