A Little Bit About Me...

I worked as a tutor in the Learning Center at SUNY Fredonia from September 2008 through December 2009. There I tutored college-level Biology and Chemistry in group and one-on-one settings. I previously tutored a local third-grader in reading and writing and taught a first grade class in Vacation Bible School for two weeks over two summers. I have a bachelor degree in biology with a minor in anthropology, including 2 years of chemistry, and a year of calculus.
I really enjoy helping people who are struggling with certain concepts or subject areas. Ever since high school I have liked to help friends and classmates in this way. At the University at Buffalo I worked as a tutor for university students in subjects ranging from English and Spanish to biology and calculus. My BS is in biomedical sciences but I am also a proficient writer and have taken many English courses. I received an award for Outstanding English Student in high school. In addition, I worked for the WHIZard Academy for Mathematics and English in Penfield, NY as a chemistry tutor for a high school student in preparation for the regents exam. Effective teaching comes by teaching the student to learn how to learn. All people are generally intelligent, but in different aspects of intelligence. All people can learn, but at varying speeds. Learning how to learn is increasing the speed of learning in those aspects of intelligence in which one is inept. Chemistry is a very abstract science, and many people find it confusing. Chemistry requires all the faculties of teaching, like 3D visual aids, memory tricks, and most importantly, analogies. I often consider chemistry a science of analogies.
