My personal teaching philosophy is that there is no teaching without learning. Most classroom studies are at least partly removed from their intended application, for reasons of assuring comprehensive competency and because of the educational structure, i.e. attending school comes in advance of and separately from applying one’s knowledge. However, learning a language, for example and especially while living in it has both a need for constant practice and occasion for immediate application. The broader linguistic community has thusly prioritized practical teaching methods, of which I wish to avail myself.

A Little Bit About Me...

Having studied language from an early age, I discovered I had an inherent ability to process foreign tongues. I have earned a Bachelor of Arts in French and French Linguistics and have studied it for over seventeen years. My trips to France are often that of assisting college students with the translational means of getting around in a foreign country. In the past ten years, I have also added Japanese to my talents. Studying independently of schools, this self-driven study has given rise to several teaching opportunities in the libraries in the South Jersey area.
I enjoy teaching all age ranges, from 6 to 96. Foreign Languages are a challenge for the uninitiated, and I believe generating an interest in embracing the challenge is a key component in teaching. There is a great need for learning foreign languages in the global world of today, and the best way to merge seamlessly is ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Since high school, I have had the opportunity to share my passion with others intermittantly, sometimes through formal tutoring sessions and sometimes in a more laidback environment. Although my work experience is in a business-like environment, I have learned the tools to communicate clearly and effectively with a variety of personalities. The extensive essays and research papers I have written in Italian have developed my grammatic skills and allowed me to interpret Italian literature. I have tutored students in Italian and German.
Anyone can learn a language. I believe that each student learns differently. It is imporant to find out what the style is and create lessons accordingly. In learning a new language, I feel it is most important visual, audio and writing tools into every lesson. I am easy-going, patient, fun-loving, yet stern. These are very important and necessar ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I thoroughly believe that teaching is a mutual engagement - students are not just listening to the story, they are authoring it! For this, I often meticulously plan lessons around themes and concepts, but allow the details to be worked out in the student's interaction with the presented materials. This leaves the questions more open-ended, and the lessons - I think - more fruitful for the exploration these questions inspire. It is my goal to teach people something they do not know in a way that changes the way that they think about what they do know - whether in language acquisition, grammatical structures, or history. That is the impact I like to impart on the people I teach, and achieving it is immensely rewarding.
As a Kentuckian, I was very lucky to have the opportunity to study and excel in French and to study abroad in Japan in high school. These experiences, related to ... read more
