The motto of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society is "Love of learning is the guide of life". I live my own life by this ideal, and I try my best to instill a love of learning in my students. Too many students believe, indeed have been taught, that math is just a series of formulas and recipes to be learned and memorized. Understanding concepts doesn’t seem to be necessary or even desirable. No wonder students “hate” math! As far as possible, I adapt my teaching style to my students' needs. When I was teaching beginner-level German to an adult opera singer, I focused on helping her develop her conversational skills and pronunciation, using English to explain difficult concepts. By contrast, when teaching a beginner-level 12-year-old, I used a total German language immersion approach and built on my student's love of creative writing by asking her to write her own endings to traditional German short stories.
