I feel that understanding the 'why' leads people to more easily grasp larger concepts and makes mistakes easier to recognize. After that practice is absolutely necessary: repetition IS the mother of learning. For children all this has to be presented in an accessible way. I try to contextualize problems in math and science in order to make them easier for children to grasp. Youtube has made potentially dangerous science projects unnecessary in order to illustrate certain concepts, while additional resources, such as the Khan Academy, make math problems easier to review. All students learn in different ways, and one on one tutoring allows the teacher to address a student’s learning style in a way that is not easily done in the classroom. For instance, a student who is more historically inclined may benefit from a brief math history lesson related to the day’s topic. Or, a student who is strong in logical reasoning could benefit from seeing some simplified proofs. How I present material depends on how a student most comfortably processes it.
