My comments on tutoring Accounting : I taught accounting at Ohio University and Remington College. I passed the AICPA exam in 1969 (first try). I have four years experience as a CPA with Ernst & Young. I have four years of experience at MPI. I do my own accounting and taxes for my Company.

I would like to work with a student needing help w/ acctg.

As a Senior in college, I worked the help room for students taking the first year accounting class. I spent my time answering questions and helping people work study questions. I would like to think that I was able to help some students. Accounting is not an easy subject to learn for someone who has never been exposed to it. I feel I have the proper background to help. I have a bachelor's degree in Accounting and I am a CPA. My current full-time position is as a Controller for my company. I also work part-time for HR Block preparing tax returns.
I would let the student try to work the problem and explain what he or she knows. Then I would explain how the correct answer is arrived at and review with the student. I would then select another similar question to see if the student can apply what we just discussed.

When possible, I try to use examples that are more relevant to helping the student understand. While I am driven and have done very well in school, some students do not have an aptitude for accounting and may only be taking it for their major. Algebraic concepts and formulas can often be, I have found, analogous to much simpler ideas or images. Once the abstract is related to the mundane, we can break down the barrier to understanding that can be an automatic or habitual construction for many people.
