My comments on tutoring Accounting : I taught accounting at Ohio University and Remington College. I passed the AICPA exam in 1969 (first try). I have four years experience as a CPA with Ernst & Young. I have four years of experience at MPI. I do my own accounting and taxes for my Company.

Punctual - prepared and professional. I look at learning rep. styles of students (pictorial, word or kinesthehic). I try to make the learning experience as painless as possible (especially math). I start with pre-tests to gauge where a student is at, then follow-up with teaching content and finish with a post-test to gauge learing objectives that have been met. Depending on the subject, I like to schedule 2-2.5 hrs ateach session. I also like to work out problems for students and e-mail them the results, where applicable.

I would like to work with a student needing help w/ acctg.

I would let the student try to work the problem and explain what he or she knows. Then I would explain how the correct answer is arrived at and review with the student. I would then select another similar question to see if the student can apply what we just discussed.
As a Senior in college, I worked the help room for students taking the first year accounting class. I spent my time answering questions and helping people work study questions. I would like to think that I was able to help some students. Accounting is not an easy subject to learn for someone who has never been exposed to it. I feel I have the proper background to help. I have a bachelor's degree in Accounting and I am a CPA. My current full-time position is as a Controller for my company. I also work part-time for HR Block preparing tax returns.

My style is based on the fundamentals; you cannot progress unless the basics are understood. Only after understanding the basics can an individual move to a higher level of understanding. I am there to facilitate the basics so that we can move together in understanding more advanced concepts. Those students I had at Bryant & Stratton years ago applauded me for introducing them to the basic understanding of accounting. I am a tax accountant and only work during tax season. Throughout the last several years I have been tutoring several students in accounting (college level) as a volunteer. I have also tutored high school math previously. I volunteer extensively with an inner city ministry group when I am not working and as such also have done some training and teaching. Algebraic concepts and formulas can often be, I have found, analogous to much simpler ideas or images. Once the abstract is related to the mundane, we can break down the barrier to understanding that can be an automatic or habitual construction for many people.
