A Little Bit About Me...

My one to one teaching style is tailored to adapt to the students learning style. However, my experience shows that keeping the student active during the learning process promotes a better learning. I use Microsoft Excel during my lessons. I create formulas, graphs, etc. and the Excel spreadsheet and ask the student to enter the data so that he/she can see how things change with different entries. This interactive process increased the student interest, kept them focused and helped them to hold the knowledge in many instances.
Most of my teaching experience is from one to one tutoring. I have tutored over 20 students and always received compliments regarding my reliability, punctuality, style and patience. As you can tell, from all of my degrees, I value education. It is a passion of mine to help explain complex subject matter to students that don't find the subject matter easy. I have found that strong students are very easy to teach. If you give them a problem, they will just work at it until they learn it. Weaker students aren't always weak, sometimes, they may just be different kinds of learners. Open and flexible.Rule #1 is to listen to the student. Rule #2 is to teach the other the way I would want to be taught. My preference in teaching is to first teach the student the practical side of things. Can the student perform the basic calculations for example so as to pass the exam. Once the student has developed a "gut level understanding", then I can move onto the more theoretical understanding of the topic, depending of course on where the student is at. I try to make math relevant to life for math is a metaphor.
My formal background is in mathematics and statistics. I have been a computer programmer since 1984 for companies including Intel and Motorola. I am a devout reader in a wide swath of topics and authors. My yearning has been to mix scientific exploration while performing a social good.
