I love working with children. I believe that all children can learn, but each child learns in a different way. In order to help a student, you must find out how they learn. You also must find their passion. With this information (passion and learning style), you can help any student succeed. Many of my students have been considered as slow, but once I began working with them, I realized that they just lacked the basic skills. I love working with children. I've taught acting at the Durham Arts Council for three years. The duties from that position included directing students in performances which I helped them create. The plays were written around themes chosen by the camp director. So, in essence, the children and I would research those themes and develop stories which I would then turn into plays using my expertise. Those plays would be performed every two weeks for the entire summer. I was responsible for preparing three classes for this project simultaneously.

I have not taught anyone or tutored anyone for money. However, I would like to have the oppitunity to be able to tutor children or young adults on their way of the journey of life. I too was tutored going through school and not just once. I attended Sylvin Learning Center every other year since sixth grade. It helped me understand the areas that I didnt and excel in the areas I did. I would like to give thas opportunity to someone else.
I learned through visual aid. So, I guess I would lean towards this style of teaching. However, if a student learns better with audio aid then I would be willing to combine the two methods to better educate the student. I like to get to know the child and form a friendship with him or her. Once we develop a rapport it is easier for them to open up to me. When the comfort level is established we then develop a mutual-learning relationship, as I can learn from the student just as much as he or she can learn from me.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a second career I wanted to put something back into my community. So as I went back to school a few years ago to complete my MBA, I thought that I wanted to teach in public schools. I was a non-traditional teacher. I therefore had to work as a substitute teacher and as a tutor because I am not yet certified. So I worked as Coach(Academic K-12)and I enjoy it. Depending upon the prescribed materials used by the school or tutoring company, I have a student centered approach to teaching. I find which approach motivates an individual student; listening, reading, writing, speaking and ensure that that method is incorporated in to my lessons. I have also found that elementary age children often need to move around if I tutor them at the end of the day. I have a sense of humor, maintain classroom organization and enjoy knowing my students. The last day is a joy for them but always includes moment of nostalgia for me.
