Love Teaching

Have a secondary education degree from Jacksonville State University. I have tutored before and have had several substitute jobs. I believe in letting the student teach sometimes by being an active participant in the learning experience. I think students do better when they can see the material, read the material, and explain the material because it makes them retain the information.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have spent most of my life in an academic environment. I thrive on success- not only my own, but also the success of others around me. I became a substitute teacher in order to gain experience as a classroom leader. Tutoring is a necessary duty of an educator. I believe a one on one environment is conducive to learning and retaining information; being able to receive direct feedback from an educator is one of the most valuable assets to a young learner.

Possession is 9/10 of the law.. Description is 9/10 of saw.

I have been writing for my whole life, and have a love of the art that is description. Since Mich of humanity's understanding is based on metaphor, description and its subtleties is a key part of any writing process, be it creative or instructional. My favorite form of writing is creative, however I also enjoy writing essays and other pieces based on fact. No matter what form of writing you endeavor to do, getting your point across through description is paramount. I have placed and won poetry contests, and have written many essays of undergraduate and graduate levels.

A Little Bit About Me...

I've tutored two kids in my neighborhood for 40 buck every two weeks. It was a marvelous experience because they were very respectful young boys...majority of the time. It was kind of hard for them to keep their focus so i drew a plan which was rewarding them with candy and toys, and of course since it was my idea I didn't charge extra. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to tutor them anymore because had to move with my mother. All in all, no matter the task I will always try my best to achieve!!!

I use age appropriate workbooks to help children to practice English. I read enjoyable books to children and have them read back to me while questioning them on the logic and content of the books. I have computer software learning equipment, learning games, learning blocks, flash cards, etc. that helps children to develop a love for reading/English. I am good at evaluating a child and determining which grade level he/she is at and trying to advance them to their current grade level.

For years, my passion has been “to gladly learn and gladly teach.” Since graduating from law school, I coached Cumberland’s National Arbitration team to two consecutive top 20 placements, taught “Criminal Evidence” to Miles College undergrads, and now will being teaching “Research and Writing” at the Birmingham School of Law. I have also taught karate and coached girl’s junior Olympic volleyball, so I’m passionate and energetic, as well.
My teaching style has to do primarily with desire; that is, if you want it and work hard, you can achieve your goals. One cannot teach or coach “heart” or discipline – that is all I require of my students -- the desire to learn, achieve, get better at what it is they are doing. I will work diligently to understand what is blocking that road to success, teach tips, tactics, and shortcuts to understanding theory, and support a love of the subject ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Many students struggle with relationships and well as their academics. I believe in creating a safe, nuturing environment were a student is able to work at his own pace, at his own level, and feel a bond with his teacher. Setting realistic and obtainable goals with the student is a key factor to success. Measuring and documenting progress allows student, teacher, and family to see a visual record of growth. Addressing multiple intelligences and multiple learning styles are essential for struggling students. Finding a student's best mode of learning increases self-esteem and time on task.
I have 20 plus years of teaching experience. I have worked with students from pre-school age to adults. I have taught students with a variety of disabilities and functioning levels from severely impaired to gifted.

I believe that it is often best to work witha student one-on-one, especially to improve their writing. Don't point out their mistakes, praise them for what they are doing well, then show how they can do even better to learn how to write on a college level.
I have extensive writing experience and have written several books including How to Give a Damn Good Speech and Business Writing for Busy People. I have worked as a newspaper reporter, magazine editor, advertising copy writer, corporate speech writer and a marketing director for a publishing company. I have a BS in business administration with a major in marketing and minor in English. I have been substitute teaching at various times in public schools since 1995. I have taught beginning computer classes to adults and have taught third through fifth grade boys at church. I hold a current substitute teachers license from the state of Alabama. My strongest subjects are history, grammar, reading, literature, drama, and social studies.
I try to put myself in the student's shoes and find which method of teaching can reach the student best. I try to identify the student's strengths and weaknesses and work out a program to help him or her achieve his or her goals. I also like to involve the parents or guardians as much as possible to keep them updated on the student's progress and how they can contribute to the learning process. I enjoy teaching literature and the elements of grammar and writing to any student that is willing to learn. I trust that each student will come prepared and willing to work. I often go beyond what is expected of me so students get my best effort when either teaching or tutoring them. When teacher and student, alongside caring parents, work as a team, that student is destined to reach his or her full potential. I demand hard work and perseverance from my students. I stress the importance of learning and critical thinking. I hope to always make a difference in a student's life.

Even before attaining my degree in English from Jacksonville State University I was passionate about all forms of teaching. I have over a year of experience tutoring college students at Jacksonville State University's Academic Center for Excellence and immediately following that nearly another year of experience tutoring dyslexic youths at the Dyslexia Clinic in Oxford, AL. I have experience tutoring biology, english, french, physcohology, and a variety of art and history classes.
Many children struggle with classroom learning because they require a different learning method than the one being offered or more direct attention than a teacher of 20+ students can offer. As a dyslexia therapist I was instructed in a number of different approaches to teaching and how to match each one to an individual student's needs. As a tutor I make it my priority to learn not only which subjects a s ... read more
