My comments on tutoring Sociology : A favorite subject.

My method of tutoring is to work with students where they are and add to their skills, to accomplish the final outcome, preferably an "A" or "B." Some students are visual learners and some are informational learners, or some students combine the two. The potential I see in students is what I try to bring out and have them realize they are capable of going a step further, to reach their goal. The importance of education and the students' continuance of same cannot be stressed enough.
I started out tutoring elementary students in basic math and English grammar while I attended college part time in the 1980's. I continued tutoring young students and adults in the 1990's, tutoring Basic Math, Basic and Intermediate Algebra, Basic Geometry, English Composition, Speech, Study Skills and the Sciences. In addition, tips were given to enhance test-taking skills in hard-to-Ace subjects ... read more

Critical thinking skills and untraditional ways are what I focus on. However the way someone learns, I will try to set the individual up to show how they learn and work with them. I will implement practices and materials I think will fit the student's profile. I feel a teacher wears many hats and you must be prepared to wear a different one any day.

MIT alum looking to tutor students in sciences and math

I love helping students understand concepts that might be confusing at first. I try to help them understand the big picture and then help them work through more detailed questions.

I have tutored several students during my studies, specifically in the sciences and math. I also have excelled in my English and writing classes throughout high school and college.

A Little Bit About Me...

I find in counseling I have to lead people to come up with their own solutions without telling them the answer. This involves showing them how to get there and teaching them the skills. If any of my friends or coworkers would describe me it would be as a patient person. I think it takes a lot of patience to tutor especially if the student is having trouble grasping a concept. You have to be creative in how you explain it to them. Everyone has a different learning style whether it is audio or visual. I think it’s important the student feels comfortable to voice frustration and ask to go over something again.
As a Professional Counselor I have learned to interact with others in a very respectful, sensitive way. It is my job to lead people to conclusions without actually telling them the answer. I believe this is very similar to teaching. I have spent the last 3 ½ years worki ... read more

During my many years of teaching, tutoring, substitute teaching, and youth ministry work, I have worked with a wide variety of students from urban and suburban environments. I've always enjoyed learning, earning a BA in Secondary Education (summa cum laude) and an MA in English from John Carroll University. I have taught all areas of English and have tutored in everything from history to algebra. My greatest strengths lie in helping students learn to write coherently, read fluently, and prepare adequately for the ACT.
I have worked with high school students reading at a third grade level as well as those who could succeed at an Ivy League school--and have appreciated all of them. I especially enjoy the challenge of motivating the under-achiever or capturing the interest of the student who is frustrated in a typical classroom. I also love seeing how a student who is "left-behin ... read more

From my time with English Club, I found there is very little advantage for either party when the teacher is draconian. Giving the student little rewards, plenty of encouragement, and being patient work much better. I like to try to understand the student on a personal level, so I can make him or her comfortable. Does the student prefer an informal session or to work hard the entire time? Will jokes encourage or distract? Questions like these are key to creating the best learning environment.
For two years I was an ESL teacher in Japan with the company English Club. While there, I acquired unique experience in the field of education. Not only did I have to design and tailor each class to the student's abilities and age, but I had to come up with creative ways to relay the material given the constrains on communication. I also have tutoring experience with 826 Michigan in Ann Arbor, ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked with both elementary and middle school teachers, as well as camp directors to develop curricula that meet the needs of students. I enjoy tutoring students and helping them build confidence in their ability to achieve, both academically and socially. In addition, I have artistic and computer skills that will be an asset when developing class projects
I would like to continue to develop my teaching skills while creating a challenging and fun learning environment for students. The middle school age group is particularly appealing to me, because students are very impressionable, interesting in learning, and open to new concepts

I build a relationship of trust with the students and offer positive reinforcement and use humor to engage all of them. My initial goal is to engage the students then move on to teaching with the final goal being the understanding of the subject in a way that is deeper then just memorization. I want the students to understand why cats see well in the dark instead of just knowing that they do. My specialty is English Literature but I enjoy teaching science and math.
I have privately tutored students that recently arrived from Japan in English with a focus on conversation to enable them to quickly feel comfortable in a new country. As they attained conversation skills I changed my focus to education based teaching with a focus on understanding the classroom teacher and being able to participate in the classroom discussion. I have a degree in English but I have completed through Calcu ... read more
