A Little Bit About Me...

I have earned my BS degree in Elementary Education. I student taught in first grade, and have taught for the last two years. My first year of teaching was at Eisenhower Middle School in Rockford, IL. I taught 7th and 8th graders Journalism; a class in which I built the curriculum for. My second year of teaching was at the same school teaching 6th grade English, Language Arts, and Science. I have taught AP English and summer school as well. I am trained in Guided Reading K-6, and in Practical Mathematics. Prior to my teaching job, I was a Special Education Para.

The description of my teaching style changes with each new class I receive. I am a strong believer in the Multiple Intelligence approach to teaching, as individual students learn in many different ways. In my classroom, expectations are explained at the beginning of each lesson. Because attention spans only last between 12 and 15 minutes, I make sure to rotate activities to insure that my students are engaged. I am also a strong believer in "real world" lessons and activities that my students can relate to. This encourages my students' critical thinking abilities as well as a desire to learn. Students must be challenged, not coddled. Students at all levels need to be pushed to find their limits and then move beyond them. Only then can they achieve real growth. We must use education as a tool to educate the next generation not only for employment but also for citizenship. In so doing, we need to take into account historical precedents and objective reality. Our students need more than simply reading comprehension and basic math skills. One of the chief contributions we can make to our students is teaching critical thinking.
