Experienced Writing and Reading Comprehension Tutor

I served as a writing tutor to my peers while I was in college. I did this for three years and it seemed to help the students a great deal. This position was accompanied by training provided by one of my professors at Montreat College. The training lasted a full semester. I have also been tutoring a 14 year-old boy in reading comprehension for the past year. He has greatly improved since we started last summer in the speed of his reading, interest in what he is reading, and better comprehension as a whole.

I have tutored before, I am currently tutoring kids at my high school everyday in the subject in which they need help in. My goal in tutoring is to not only to have the child succeed in the course but to understand the concept of the course. My style of teaching is different for each child, because everyone does not learn the same way. Some people are visual learners and with them I focus on teaching them with pictures. Others are audible learners in which with these I focus on teaching with songs. My main reason for tutoring is to make learning fun!

A Little Bit About Me...

I was a straight A student throughout school. I am currently a high school senior, so the information is still fresh in my mind. I have spent a few semesters as a tutor and volunteer assistant in a local elementary school. I enjoy working with children and being able to help them succeed in school, because without school, the future is bleak!
I prefer a hands-on approach when possible. I lik to help the children relate to what they are learning in order to help them remember it.

A total learning experience

I believe every student can learn, and as a result incorporate a variety of learning techniques to address a variety of learning styles. I wish to develop students in the four language proficiencies (reading, writing, listening, speaking), and as a result I use a lot of hands-on activities which involve movement and engagement on the student's part. At every opportunity, I try to create a multi-sensory experience of language learning for my students, so that they may fully "taste" various languages and cultures.
Since coming to the Charlotte region in 1996, I have had a wide variety of experiences as a language teacher, having taught in public, private, homeschool, summer school and tutoring situations. Although my primary focus is teaching French, I have also had the opportunity to equip students in Spanish I and II to continue with their language studies. Passionate about pro ... read more

My comments on tutoring Journalism : I am a former college journalist and have done occasional freelance work since.

Critical thinking is nourished so well-considered and studied opinions are more than welcome; they are essential. Students have conveyed to me that my style is one of "relaxed intensity" with a flair for the dramatic laced with a sense of humor and a genuine appreciation and respect for the views of others. Focused creativity is required.
I am a career educator who has taught English and other Humanities based courses extensively since 1988. My primary experience is on the college and university level but I also have a high school and middle school background. The educational and pedagogical philosophy I hold is this: The ability to communicate effectively remains the most vital of skills and is crucial to academic and career advancement. It is with a sense of privilege and honor I teach and with a sense of urgency as communication skills continue to evolve in a quickly changi ... read more

I enjoy helping anyone become a better writer! I strive to help people know that the first time they write an essay, a letter or a speech that it won't always come out perfect. From the best-selling novelist to the high school student who lacks confidence to let others read what they've written, all writers need encouragement and peer editing. I enjoy helping others to edit their own work and giving simple tips and advice I've gained through years of editing and writing. I believe anyone can become a better writer no matter how much they think that they lack the "writing genes."
Over the years I have become a diligent student of the college essay, journalism and non-fiction writing. As a literature major, I was trained how to analyze stories and ideas through discussion and then how to put ideas into written form. As a creative writing minor I was trained how to edit sentences ... read more
