To develop responsible learners who will succeed in and contribute to a changing world is vital! Because of this, a student-centered education is important. A constructivism approach to learning is very important to me as opposed to the behavioralist approach that has dominated education. I strive to actively engage students in their own education. Also, it is important to me to determine the best learning style to use for each individual student. I am pleasant, outgoing and have a great sense of humor. I am dedicated and enthusiastic and patient and caring and I love teaching.
I have many and varied experiences in teaching music in the public schools and privately for over 30 years. Throughout my coursework at Eau Claire, I have adopted a constructivist approach to teaching. That is, I believe that every child is unique and learns differently. It is the instructors job to find out how each child learns the material, whether it be visually with demonstrations or integrating the material to an area of interest (like a favorite sport), and then cater to their particular need. As a result, I am easy to approach, likeable, and try to be a supportive as opposed to disciplinary mentor. I am also a huge fan of answering the 'Why do I need to know this?' question, and do my best to connect the problem or subject to something applicable to the child.
